when people mention extremely high gas prices in CA... what grade/octane of fuel is the lowest possible one? Could this be the reason why CA's gas prices are higher? Just a thought. We shall see if I am right or just grasping at straws.

You are not grasping at straws. California has additives required by law in gasoline sold within it's borders and this some of ther reason for their higher gas prices.
The latest range I have seen in Houston is 1.69-1.83 for regular unleaded. I've paid as low as 1.58 within the last two weeks though. I guess the days of the gs wars that took the price down to 19.9 cents /gal are over!?!?!

Yes, the additives are a bit of the reason. The gas tax there is rather high as well. My uncle lives in San Bernadino and he was telling me that gas in his area was 3.19 per gallon. Now back down to 2.89 for a bit. I would definately hate to live out there.....I'll hang here in the SE for a while.

I think our octanes here are 87-89-91 or 87-89-93. I know the first two are right but I;m not so sure about the third one. I tell you though, the prices are KILLER!

Ouir prices here have fallen to $1.46 Regular (87 octane) this week.
BTW, 100 was once called "aviation combat octane"; my late maternal uncle, discharged from the Navy after WW II, loaded his Jeep with this stuff and a drum full of refuels, and drove from CA to TX in record time, non-stop (a buddy of his rigged the drum for refueling on the move)...but, when he stopped the vehicle, all the valves and seals burnt out.
Moral? Don't try this at home in your late-model vehicles.

It's like $1.80 here for regular. My rattletrap likes 87 just fine.

I have to use the premium in my car...that adds some to the cost, but please, this gas hike is ridiculous...our gas prices were just raised again today!

I think our gas prices jumped almost .10c in the past week. The average for 87 octane gas is $1.90+ in my area. I'm really about to quit driving!

Bill... I may have to travel over your way to get gas... that is a $.39 difference in about 170 miles.

We have it really expensive here.
1L is about 90c - $1
1L = 0.26 Gallon
so in saying that
1 Gallon = 3.785L
I would rather Pay what u pay for gas than what we pay.

The additives are one of the reasons for the higher prices in California. There is also a supply and demand issue. Gas formulated to sell in CA can't be sold in other states and vice/versa.
Between the price of gasoline and the price of milk, I'm ready to sell my car and ride a cow to work!

"A FRIGGIN' $1.46 a GALLON?"

How much would you charge me to send a tanker load out here?
