Bomb blasts hit Athens police

ATHENS, Greece (Reuters) -- Three timebombs have exploded outside a central Athens police station early on Wednesday but caused no serious casualties, a police official said. Authorities had cordoned off the area around the station in Kalithea after an anonymous caller warned a newspaper about them, the official said.

"The first two explosions went off in a span of five minutes. The third exploded half an hour later as bomb experts were still looking for it," the police official told Reuters. An ambulance was called for one policeman slightly hurt by the third blast, he said. Kalithea is near several hotels to be used by Olympic officials during the games in August.

Fears have been running high that the games could be a target of political violence. "The police are treating this matter very seriously with only three months to go until the games," the official said. "You have three sophisticated time bombs going off outside a police station, that's serious enough for police." The number of bomb attacks in Greece had decreased after the dismantling of the guerrilla group "November 17" in 2002.

I saw a quote by the head of the Australian Olympic team. He said they weren't comtemplating pulling out, but if any individuals wanted to pull out, they were free to do so.

I'd demand a pullout; Athens is well within the range of every nutcase terror group, poorly situated and indefensible by sea or ground, and to hell with "historical importance".

JMHO...Bill/streetsoldier

They can't really, there's way too much money $$$$$$$$$ invested so far. The athletes need a chance to prove their skills and if everyone cuts & runs when there is a bad situation, then like in Spain, the perps win. We don't want the bad guys to grab control. Every time some group backs down, the terrorists win another one. I agree with Bill regarding the proximity to every large nutgroup base but we need to call in the Exterminators :grrr:

I agree with Corona about not caving into them running out of the oylimpics.I hope that the games are held in a tranquil way and leave the atletes do the competitions.

Well Luis, you have to hope for the best but plan for the worst. This venue is for the athletes and that's where the emphasis should be placed. However, those responsible for planning should have a 'game book' themselves on the most probable incidents and countermeasures.

The organizers at Athenes say that the security measures that will be implemented during the games will be unprecedented but time will tell how that security ring works there.

The Summer Olympics could get dangerous.
