STUPID QUESTION ALERT lol

Please forgive me for asking a stupid question. It may be forwarded to a weather related forum if you feel it's more appropriate

People say there is old adage that if you count 1,2,3 and so on you can actually tell how far away a storm is..

Here's my question.. do you count after you see the lightning or hear the thunder lol

I tried to figure this out during Friday nights RFL thunderstorms but kept getting confused lol

The speed of sound travels generally about 1100 feet per second (or 1 mile every 5 seconds ...) .... 3 seconds is about 1 kilometer ....

That doesn't help me any lol..

All I asked was whether you had to count after you saw the lightning or heard the thunder lol

I count one second intervals till I hear the thunder, the number of seconds multiplied by 5 equals the number of miles away the storm is. John I am over in Polk Co where we get hammered with the thunderstorms pretty regularly.

You start counting after the lightning...

  1 second   = 0.2 of a mile
  5 seconds = 1 mile
10 seconds = 2 miles
15 seconds = 3 miles
20 seconds = 4 miles

and so forth...
