Self-Check Lanes are now popping up all over the place, not only at grocery supermarkets but also at hardware chains.

Since I am not the big shopper in my family, I like to use the self-check lanes. It is much quicker.

It is convenient, but I worry about machines replacing the American worker, ya know? For that reason only, I prefer the "old fashioned" way.

It always tends to confuse the heck outta me and take me longer than it would the check out girl...I gave those self check lanes a try, and went back to the good old fashioned checkers!

Who's sick of the grocery stores that require their club card?! Don't you hate it when you get through the line, realizzed you switched purses and don't have the dreaded card?! I walked out of a store in LA. because they refused to swipe another card for me...they wanted me to re-apply for a new card....forget that! Who has the time? I shop mostly at the 1 grocery store in town that does not require a club card. I need to add that the who's buggin' me list .

I use the self-check lines if I'm just getting a few items. Once I tried it with a full-size order, and it was more of a pain than it was worth because I kept having to stop to bag. And if you have some exotic produce, try finding the right type from their charts...

I don't have the self-checkout available in my grocery store yet. I do like having it available at some of the other stores I've been too like Home Depot and Kmart. I guess I would have to see how cumbersome it would be doing my groceries by I did vote yes.

For orders of 20 items or less, I much prefer checking items out myself. Trick is to leave items for last that may not scan quickly - alcohol or produce. Items you need the main cashier's help with. So I just run items thru that ring up rapidly. Then wait for the last few items to process thru. My kids love the self checkout scanners too.

Other times I have large orders, so self scanners are of no help. But I prefer bagging my orders, which wasn't asked but I volunteered that info.

At my store, there are only 4 plastic bag racks on the scale. People come through with huge $200 orders. The attendant has to override the computer because no more room exists on the scanner, and the consumer has to place the bags on the floor.

So, yes, the self-checks are not intended for large orders, though some models do have more capacity.

it takes just as long sometimes to wait in line at the self check out counter. So i don't really mind goin in line at the register.

I've seen this before. Several terminals need assistance or need bypassed for alcohol or tobacco. It does get hectic sometimes.

Both. Same here, if it's a large order it's a pain to stop and bag. Ditto the exotic produce too. What it comes down to is which line looks the fastest, and whether any lines have pretty girls in them.

The thing that I don't like about self checkout (especially at Home Depot) is that they never have enough people on the other registers, so there are 20 people in line with loads of plywood and 2 X 4s but only 1 register open.

I do my grocery shopping at Albertsons.. and there is this 1 pretty girl that works there. I think she likes me. One day she let me go through a 15 or less lane with almost 20 items lol

Groceries i go through the regular check-out but the Home Depot self-serve checkouts are wonderful when you only have a few items.

We don't have the self-check-out options here in the hills yet.

If I have one or two items I may check myself out but otherwise I do it the old fashioned way.

The only time I go through self-check outs is when I have 5 items or less (unless I have 15 small items), beyond that, I let the cashier scan them.

I haven't seen the self-checkouts yet but I picked up on a comment someone else made about those "club cards". I hate even the idea of those. I don't think any supermarket should give the person in front of me a discount on their groceries just because they were willing to give the store's corporate office their address and phone number.

Set a price for an item and keep it at that price for all customers. These stores should just be glad I'm buying my groceries there - it's not like it's the only grocery store in town.
