CBS) The NCAA announced that war will not stop their college basketball tournament play.

The governing body for college sports were considering whether to postpone the men's and women's basketball tournaments if the United States goes to war with Iraq this week.

But, NCAA president Myles Brand says upcoming games in the men's and women's basketball tournaments will go on as scheduled after tournament officals consulted with Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the young men and women who are in the desert and elsewhere defending our freedom," Brand said. "We are also concerned that life go on as normal. We see no reason, after consulting with Secretary Ridge, to make any alterations to our plan."

Should war break out during the games, CBS -- the men's tournament broadcast rights holder -- may be forced to find other outlets to air the games.

"We have to arrive at a position that makes the most sense for the NCAA, but we don't want a tyrant to run our lives," NCAA president Myles Brand said Monday night.

The NCAA men's tournament would be the first big sports event affected by any conflict in Iraq. The first game, between North Carolina-Asheville and Texas Southern, is scheduled for Tuesday night in Dayton, Ohio.

The rest of the first round begins Thursday, which would be after the 48-hour deadline President Bush set Monday night for Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq or face war.

The women's tournament begins Saturday.
