Any suggestions. I think for my needs a AMD athlon is the way to go with 256MB upgradable to 512. 2.6 ghz proccessor. Thanks :)

UGH!! That is what I had and I must say I had nothing but problem after problem.

Check out the Dell website RB. You may be surprised at what you find there.

What kinds of problems, Linda? I guess no computer is full-proof when it comes down to it...each model has it's own 'personality'. ;)

Well after a year my monitor went out only to find out that it was out of warranty a week before it went out. Then I kept having problems with the hard drive. My floppy drive died and so did my re-writable drive.

The CPU was out of date when they sent it and I paid too much for it. Live and learn.

I will never buy Gateway again. lol.

The Dell XPS, "ultimate PC" seems to be what you are looking for...HUGE hard-drive capacity, with all the extras (multimedia tasks, video editing, you name it) plus Dell's award-winning 24-7-365 service.

Dude, ya gotta get a DELL!

NEVER buy and Emachine! We had ours just a little over a year. Had to rebuild the hard drive 2 or 3 times during that year (using the restore CD that the company had to send to me since they forgot to pack one in the box with the computer.) Then, after the warranty went out, the puter crashed and died. The hard drive went bad and the motherboard was messed up too. $500 looked like a bargain at the time. WRONG!
On the other hand, we bought my daughter an Acer computer in dec. '97. The only problem we had with it was the monitor went out after a couple of yrs, but it had the extended warranty on it and the company fixed it. Believe it or not, the computer still works, but has gotten to be a pain to use since it growls and groans and takes forever to boot up and load things.

Is it a store-bought Presario? THose are trouble if you attempt to do anything cool with it! Perhaps the build-your-own, straight-from-the-factory machines are better.

Right now I have a Dell Demension, and it has not given me any problems! Dell printers, on the other hand, well, we will save that for another day!

I had a Gateway from June 30th, 2000 to December 17th, 2004, (a total of 1,346 days). As some of you know, the monitor was getting too dark, nothing I did seemed to lighten it up. Knowing that Windows 98 on it and without new updates, I figured it was time to get a new one. I also had a feeling that it was about to "just die" while online.

I have had my Dell Dimension 2400 with flat panel model since December 18th, well the evening of December 17th and had a problem that ended up being Windows XP freezing up. After about 30 annoying hours things got back to normal with the occasional IP address disappearing, the most recent being, after several weeks, a few late night's ago, everything has been great. This was an issue when I was trying to get my firewall and anti-virus program installed and working.

It was great to hear my cable company inform me about "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew" in Start > Run > type 'cmd' or 'command'

Don't think we're really much help. All depends on our experience with the machines we have. I have a Mac G3 at work that does the job for me there, and my Gateway 500 series has given me no problems in the two years I've had it.

My only suggestion is that you get enough RAM to be able to successfully maneuver through the web.

I might try a DELL if and when this machine gets to be a big problem for me.

Johnathan I recommend Dell. We have around 30 of them at work and my latest one is a Dell as well. You may want to take a look at their refurbished stock. For the most part these are PC's that have been returned withing the first 30 days after purchase. They have the full warranty and you can even extend it to 3 years. If you need any help just give me a shout on AIM :-)

The start out price is $500. I didn't get many upgrades, either (not even speakers; the ones I had on my other computer aren't working on my new one).

I believe it cost about $1,200.

My Windows XP only was very slow/freezing up in the first 36 hours I had it, very late on December 17th and the first
two-third of December 18th and I have 512 MB of RAM.

Speakers should work on any computer; as far as I know there is no such thing as them needing to be compatible.
