Would it be acceptable to you for a 6th grader to bring Playboy or Penthouse to school? They have articles, too, and photos of 'attractive women." Where do you draw the line?

If 6th graders brought in "High Times", I guess we
would say that there were articles on how
herbs altered the conciousness to be better
aware of Mother Earth, too, eh? Maybe a little
"gardening", in there?

Only unacceptable because of traditional values and morals. However, the fact is that most people in this country hold such values, so I can see the school's concern over being sued by parents, and as a result understand their desire to keep these kind of materials out. However, saying that the school has a right to ban it because of "moral" reasons (the school forcing arbitrary morals upon students) is not justified IMO.

No, Playboy, Penthouse or other similar magazines do not belong in school. Neither does High Times, for that matter.

However, we're discussing Sports Illustrated, a magazine that in all likelihood is kept in the school library. This kid has probably seen it in there, so how would he have known that ONE particular issue of the magazine would not be allowed?

For that matter, what if Playboy or Penthouse were to take the opposite tack, and publish one issue per year that featured no photographs at all of the usual variety? Would that ONE issue be allowed in school? I'm guessing not.

We used to bring National Lampoon into school to read. Upon reflection, that was probably not a good idea. But by comparison, Sports Illustrated is Highlights magazine.

You don't suspend and recommend reform school for one small error in judgement, folks.
