What did you want to be when you grew up?

#1 Postby azsnowman » Mon Feb 23, 2004 8:24 am

All of us had childhood dreams of being something "GREAT!", like a fireman, policeman, astronaut etc. What where you dreams and did you reach your goals/dreams?

For me, yes and no.......growing up, I had this PASSION for the Old West and Ancient History, I always wanted to be an archeologist *or* a policeman. Well.....I'm a reserve peace officer now, thus fulfilling half of my goals.

Well, according to my mom I wanted to be a 'weather girl'. I had my trusty chalkboard and I'd pretend I was doing the wx on TV. I barely remember that stage!!! Honest. I was also into playing school big time back then too.

By the time I was a teen I had it narrowed down to two things:

A Stewardess (what they were called back then)

An Architect (I enjoy drawing house plans)

Neither panned out!!!

Mary

PS - self edit, well no wonder I didn't become an architect, first you need to know how to spell it.....LOL

Don't laugh-an opera singer. Too weird seeing as I was an accountant for 20 years and now am studying to be a meteorologist. Think I must have been re-programmed by aliens!

Firefighter, astronaut, or doctor.

To this day, I still admire the bravery and strength of firefighters. I still look in awe towards the stars at night and I have absolutely always loved how the Shuttle looks in flight. My desire to be a doctor lasted from second grade until after I'd worked in the hospital for a few years. I enjoyed being a part of a team that was committed to saving lives and that satisfied that desire for me, without the expense of med school loans.

Always a meteorologist. I spent two of my high school years interning at the local CBS affiliate. They went through a lot of weather people in that time and by the end of the first 6 months, I was training the newbies. In the end, we had went through 7 or 8 people and they wanted to hire me for the weekend weather job. I was just a junior in high school and would have to have been available for the morning show fill-ins. I politely said no and they cancelled my internship.

That was my only shot at being on tv and I was in no position to take the job. I may someday go to school to be a tv met, but for now I am going to be a teacher.

Truck driver, doctor, writer/illustrator, cartoonist and meteorologist.

I guess I did fulfill some of that truck driver in a sense...no not an 18 wheeler...BUT...was a delivery driver in a company van when I worked for a textile goods company in Cincinnati and then for gift wrap/shopping bag company in Walden, NY. :) I also took employees with non-life threatening injuries to the hospital while in Walden.

Enjoyed playing medical clinic with my sister when were in our early years of grade school...she and her nurse kit and I and my doctor bag. :) We'd pretended our stuffed animals were "human" patients and tend to them.

During my grade school years, too, I enjoyed making up story books for kids  about cars/trucks, pets, firefighters/paramedics, etc., and then stapling pages together and tada! my homemade version of a book! :)
Nowadays you can submit a child's creations to a real publisher...we have 2 books that my niece Janae has had published adorning our great room cofffee table! :D

Will get back to you on the cartooning thing in a later post.

Gotta get a bite o' lunch! :)

I actually WANTED to be an Engineer. What was I thinking?

That was actually when I was old enough to think...when I was real young I wanted to be a steamfitter like my Dad. Man am I glad I didn't go that route.

You know I wanted to be a teacher first - then went to school and decided that wasn't what I wanted to do.

Then I wanted to become an accountant. Looks like I achieved that - which if anyone knew my history - is pretty amazing. I like my job - but in reality its alot of long hours. But God gave me this gift and the ability to do it for 18 years which I have done just that...

Okay, about the cartooning thing that I alluded to earlier...well, I think it started (of all places) my paternal grandparents' house during a visit there...
I've always enjoyed reading the comics section of newspapers...and grabbed a sheet of paper and a pencil and tried my hand at drawing a B.C. strip character from just looking at the newspaper one...and did pretty good just for practice. :) Later on did some short strips of my own...don't know where they are now...and even did a political one or two, also.

About meteorology...I'm just your amateur wx enthusiast...NOAA radio and Skywarn spotter. :) Due to a learning disability in the area of advanced mathematics...regarding algebra, calculus, physics, chemistry, etc., well...a college met program for me would be a literal hair-out-of-the-head puller and pyschiatrist appts.

As a fellow accountant/analyst, I think that you just came to your senses!

I don't think I had anything in particular that I wanted to be. I thought about being a nurse or a teacher and I still didn't have a clue when I went to college. After my first accounting course I felt that this was the path I wanted to take. I found it fun, like putting together a puzzle.

Started out wanting to be an artist, but changed my mind once I was introduced to computers (9th grade). I have been doing computer programming ever since (as both a hobby and as my career). Weather has always been a hobby, but I was worried it would become less fun if it was a job.

Actually I don't remember what I wanted to be. The way I love plants I could start a nursery. But, it might cease to be fun. I'd rather have it be fun than it becoming just another job. :D

An artist, I suspect, in the early going. I spent a lot of time drawing...even took some lessons. Mostly I just wanted to be a normal guy. Living in a small Midwestern town, I guess I expected to grow up there, find a local job, marry the local girl, retire in the local mobile home park, and be buried in the local cemetery. Mostly unnoticed, but with a smile still on my face and a couple extra bucks in my pocket.

I discovered that living life to my potential meant stretching those limits (from the local Midwestern town with my local girl!).

Now...I'm just beginning to understand what I want to be when I grow up.

When I grow up I want to be a pilot and a writer. Put the plane on autopilot and work on my books via my laptop along the way.
