(I know this has been a topic previously discussed.....but I could not locate it for this post!!)

Once again, the connection of this syndrome and intense interest in weather was a topic around the lunch-room table at school! This connection has been noted before by those here who do have Aspergers.

My interest in Aspergers (high functioning Autism) began with a student I had last year. I had never heard of this syndrome.....but such an interesting journey this started for me!! My student was female (unusual) and even tho she is not in our class this year, I have kept in contact with her. I am so flattered for the hugs and "high-fives" she generously gives me now....it was not easy (for her) to get to this point with me! Her intense interest in weather seemed surprising to me......until it was mentioned right here among these pages that this is a very common bond with other Asperger individuals! At lunch, a co-worker was discussing a student in his class with Aspergers......followed with......"but what a little weatherman he is"!! WOW!! Once again, this connection seems to pop up!! Interesting, isn't it ??!!.............p :wink:

WOW, That is very very interesting!! Josh and Tom are both very involved in all of the details about Aspergers. It is because of them that I stop and read anything related to it so I can better understand it. They are both an inspiration!!

I, too, learned of Aspergers when I was working with a young lad named John about 18 months ago. I was assisting him and his family in some tutoring after work. He was a delightful young man. I didn't have time to see just how much interest this 9 or 10 year old had in weather, but I know he had an intense interest in art.

I think the link to weather is a wonderful one for those who are diagnosed with Aspergers...it offers them a wonderful outlet and area of focus.

You are a special person, Petal Pusher, for taking the time with the young lady. Hugs and high fives are earned, not given freely, so I am sure you discovered what I did. I actually received more than I was able to give to John.

That young lad surely helped me as much or more than I was able to help him.

My son has been diagnosed with Aspergers...I think I brought this up in the tropical forum...I was away from the board during the peak of the season last year...while I was working to get my son in a program here in Florida...(BTW...the Baudwin school down here at the Nova campus is an excellent center...we went through the Dan Marino clinic/school as well...excellent resources down here).

I'm sure this gene comes from my side of the family...I'm mathematical...obsessed with the weather (tropics in patiular) and majored in Meteorology in college.

I work with...guess what...analytics and databases for my day job.

He's a special, special little guy...Remembers EVERYTHING. I wouldn't have him any other way.

I'm also very good with numbers, photographic memory type stuff, long words, and of course the weather.

This is, I assume, related to my Asperger's syndrome.

I was diagnosed in December of 1996 with it, and since then things have slowly gotten better for me, more so in the past year or so. I've been placed on the right medications, lost weight, and I've also slowly been becoming more motivated to do what's right for me.

Pam, it sure is an interesting connection. I thank you very much for your story to start out this thread and the link. I have been on that site before (as well as others from time to time.

Steve, I thank you very much for telling me [and all of us] about John. I remember you mentioning you knew (or know) someone with Asperger's, most recently in the "Self Esteem" thread it is nice to hear the few out there (here at Storm2K) that have had contact with someone with Asperger's Syndrome.

I thought it was a great idea to get this relatively new syndrome on a wonderful board, thus I started a thread on Asperger's (for those of you who missed my posts about it, I was diagnosed with it in the late 1990's) right after Wednesday, February 5th, 2003.

A couple months ago, I was unable to find this original thread... so I started another one. If anyone is interested, here are those two threads:

I attribute A.S. to my love of weather...even though I've been into it since my jr high years (wasn't dx until age of 35).

They are special people MW - I remember seeing you here before. Welcome back! There's also a new foundation called the Bubel/Aiken Foundation set up by Clay Aiken. He received his diploma in Special Education and he was going to teach autistic children. His one student, Michael Bubel is very special to him and it was his mother that made Clay try out for American Idol. Clay set up the foundation in his honor.

He's a special, special little guy...Remembers EVERYTHING. I wouldn't have him any other way.

I attribute my Asperger's Syndrome to my interest in weather, however, there are many people (obviously including members here) that aren't aspies and they are interested. I wouldn't discount my chances of not being interested if I were neurotypical, that low.
