Yesterday, I took my 8-year-old son Tyler to hospital to get his right thumb put back together. Last Sunday, he got the tip of the thumb cut off in a door at his friend's house. It was cut off from about the middle of the fingernail and was too messed up to re-attach. Yesterday the plastic surgeon did a restoration and it should turn out ok. He'll just have one thumb a little shorter than the other. He has a cast up to his elbow, and is taking it well.
Our oldest son Ryan was attacked by a dog when he was 6. He needed work by a plastic surgeon and has a big scar on his face. Our next son, Aaron had his foot hit by a lawnmower two summers ago. Fortunately he was wearing boots or he would have lost toes. It still took about 6 months till it was all healed. Last summer, our youngest got a serious burn on his leg in a freak campfire accident - a rock exploded and a piece of burning plastic stuck to his leg. He has a big scar on his leg.
When I was 14 I lost my left eye in a work accident. About two months ago my wife was in an accident when the car slid off the road on the ice and hit a culvert. She fell getting out of the car and tore cartilage in her knee.
Hopefully our kids are learning that they are not indestructable. None of these were due to any real negligence - they were all just freak accidents. Hopefully we're all done now.
We've met our quota for injuries!
