Miami school in lockdown - Update

#1 Postby GalvestonDuck » Tue Feb 03, 2004 1:40 pm

A school in Miami Florida is in lockdown, after a student was found dead in the bathroom. Miami-Dade County police said the death at Southwood Middle School appeared to be "unnatural," but refused to release further details.

anytime a student dies in a school it is unnatural.

I am thinking that the student may have been killed.

I'm just glad that's not my school, otherwise I would ask the same question...why?

Texasstooge - anytime a student is found dead in the bathroom, at any school, is tragic news. I don't think you meant for your post to come out the way it did. Surely you think this is very sad news? Somewhere out there, are parents that said good-bye to this child this morning, sending him/her off to school with complete trust he/she was safe at school. I find that very sad. Hits home with me, b/c I have two daughters, 8th and 11th graders.

The most recent student in a Dallas middle school who was killed was a 7th grader, who was stabbed several times by a 16-year-old boy for no apparent reason. The suspect was caught, and still no answer to why he stabbed the other boy. :(

MIAMI — A 14-year-old student was found dead Tuesday in a restroom at a public middle school and police have ruled the case a homicide.

Authorities have another student in custody in connection with the case at Southwood Middle School but no further details were available.

Police Sgt. Dennis Morales said other students found the boy's body in a boys' restroom at about 8:30 a.m., but said police were not releasing any details on how he died.

Students were locked in their classrooms with their teachers as a precaution and a crisis management team was working with administrators, said Mayco Villafana, a Miami-Dade schools spokesman.

"Every student in this school is safe" Villafana said.

More than 150 worried parents gathered outside the school.

Southwood, which opened in 1976, was the county's first magnet school, specializing in visual and performing arts for students in grades six, seven and eight. About 2,000 students attend the school.
