Official: U.S. one vote away
The Bush administration believes that it is now only one vote away from a Security Council majority on a resolution setting a March 17 deadline for Iraqi compliance, according to a senior State Department official. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Tony Blair outlined a series of tests today that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein would have to meet to prove that he was complying with the U.N.

One vote away. I can see where Mr Blair is coming from - but will Sadamn take the tests? I doubt it - but as long as we are working on the problem.
Once we have take every possible scenario out of the picture - the more justificiation we have to attack Iraq. Until then we just have to have patience and pray that this will be a swift and low casuality war.
Just my two cents.

But France and Russia will veto and kill the resolution if the US gets the 9 votes.

I agree J. They don't care if it passes, but they want the world to know where each country stands before the action begins so those countries can't take credit later.

The vote will be a roll call for the record and that's about all. Anything short of full disarmament or Saddam going into exile will result in war IMHO. The currently discussed "benchmarks" are just a way of bringing the needed votes so the US and Britian can claim a majority victory prior to action.

how can bush allow saddam a free pass? he has made saddam into hitler. do we want saddam in comfy exhile with his 7 billion dollars so he can fund terrorism against us? further, as long as saddam is free, he is a threat to return to iraq. it will keep iraq destabilized. bush says saddam is a rapist and murderer. should bush pardon all the rapists and murderers in us prisons, give them a million bucks, and let them live in comfort. letting saddam go into exhile is disgusting!!
