Baptists approve slavery apology

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Fri Jan 02, 2004 12:18 pm

By DARREN BARBEE, Star-Telegram Staff Writer

The Tarrant Baptist Association has unanimously approved an apology for slavery in Texas as part of a broader effort to see a resolution passed by the Legislature.

"We want to serve as an example," said the Rev. Wesley Shotwell, vice moderator of the association's executive board and pastor of Ash Creek Church in Azle.

Each of the association pastors who attended a Dec. 8 meeting -- about 50 -- voted in favor of the resolution. Black leaders praised the resolution, which directs the State Board of Education to study how slavery is taught in schools. It also calls for the establishment of a scholarship fund, a museum and a memorial.
