BAGHDAD, Iraq - A large explosion ripped through a restaurant in central Baghdad on New Year’s Eve, killing at least five people and injuring at least 25 others, police and hospital officials said. Witnesses said the blast was caused by a car bomb.

Journalists said that the front of the restaurant was destroyed and that the building was in flames. Several cars were wrecked and in flames, and a large crater was blown on a side street next to the restaurant.
“There was an explosion. The glass came flying. Everything else blew up. People were blown apart,” said Basam Sarhan, 25, a baker who was working in the kitchen at the back of the restaurant,
Nabil Hanna, the owner, said that he was not in the restaurant, Nabil, at the time of the blast but that he had heard it was crowded with about 50 people, including about a dozen foreigners who were attending a New Year’s party. Hospital workers said at least three Westerners were among the injured.
Gunfire was heard afterward as U.S. soldiers headed to the site with U.S. military helicopters hovering overhead.
U.S. soldiers and Iraqi police had stepped up security Wednesday in Baghdad, erecting more razor wire and checkpoints in key areas. “We had information that there would be explosions today,” said Lt. Gen. Ahmed Kadhem, the deputy Iraqi interior minister and chief of the Baghdad police.

Some updated news from Reuters...
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Three Los Angeles Times reporters were among those injured when a bomb ripped through an upscale Baghdad restaurant filled with New Year's revelers on Wednesday, the newspaper said.
Injured in the blast were Tracy Wilkinson, the Times Rome bureau chief, correspondent Ann Simmons and Chris Kraul, who until recently headed the paper's Mexico City bureau.
"So far it's cuts and bruises but we don't have a complete report," Times Managing Editor Dean Baquet said, adding that all three had been taken to a military hospital for treatment. He said Wilkinson had called the paper and was apparently in good spirits.

Belly dancing is become more popular in this country... so it has nothing to do with Iraqi's not being "in style."
