We received a Christmas card yesterday from some friends in Conroe, Texas. On the front of the card was a beautiful photo of their daughter, Chandler (middle name, Lake).

We remember when Chandler Lake was born...her parents told us they chose her name because she was conceived while they were vacationing near Chandler Lake (Oregon, or was it Oklahoma).

My youngest son Jarrod was named after Jarrod Barkley on Big Valley, the TV western. Jason was named Jason because...just because. The words surrounding his conception were "trust me, it's a good idea."

Had we followed the rules of our friends, Jarrod would instead have been named Boom Boom (because I contend he was conceived after an argument on the 4th of July (April 4 is his birthday). Jason would have been named Best Western since he was born exactly nine months after our first wedding anniversary.

Our granddaughter Emma was likely conceived while her parents were vacationing in Japan....perhaps she should have been named little Tokie Yo instead.

Next year at this time, we might have a another grandchild named Sonny Beach. My son and his wife are vacationing in Hawaii in January.

My son was named after 3 generations of Alexanders...

My husband actually decided to name this one thats in the oven right now.. he chose Sarah (He fell in love with the Fleetwood Mac song)

Of course I like the name because of it's biblical connection. The meaning is lovely too, it means princess

Awww!! This is one of the reasons that I won't be having a child any time soon- I read baby name books already, I haven't a clue what I would name my first child!

Oh, BTW, following the rule above, my name would be Valentine!

Let's see. Where to start. Well I used to work in a doctor's office and it just drove us nuts when people went by their middle name, but for insurance purposes their chart name was their legal name. Would they give that name when making appts.? Oh no! So I said I'd be sure to give my kids first names they liked. Next, it annoyed us no end trying to figure out nicknames or shortened names. So again, I told myself my kids would have first names that can't be shortened - Elizabeth to Betsy, etc., or Margaret to Peggy. Also, my dad's first name was Clarence. He absolutely hated that name and people called him Bud. You could however get his attention by calling out - Clarence! I must confess I did that on occasion....LOL Sorry Dad (he's up in Heaven now).

So wrap all of that up and I named my girls:

Nina - somewhat after George Clooney's mom, who was a patient in our office, Nina Clooney. It helped that she was the most gracious and sofisticated, pretty too, mom we ever had come in. We adored her. BTW, I spent 10 years of my life in that office - 6 docs, 4 offices - so yes we saw many, many patients during that time. And celebs too (well local celebs). I just loved Mrs. C.'s name and so when I had my first girl, there was just no question about it - she was named Nina Marie Bosken. Does she like it? Welllll.....it's growing on her. Let's just say she's rarely come across another student with that name.

Laura - I can't attribute this name to anyone or anything. It just sounded so nice to me, very feminine and couldn't be shortened. And so Laura became Laura Anne Bosken - my given middle name. She was almost named Shannon though. Had she had red hair she would definitely been a Shannon!

I had only one boy name in mind, I was really stuck there. If one had been a boy - Mark.

When my oldest daughter was born, I wanted to be abled to call her Ally, after Ally Sheady, my all time favorite actress at the time. So, we decided to name her Alycia, so I could call her Ally. My second wasn't named after anyone in particular, her name is Caitlyn, we call her Caitie. After she was born, people kept asking if we named them after the TV series "Kate & Ally". Well, we never thought of that, and no they weren't named after the show, but it fit pretty good. We still get asked that question occasionally...

Ok, this is gonna make ya'll absolutely scream with shock, but I named my daughter Melissa after Melissa Manchester, the singer that is referred to in Barry Manilow's Song "Could this be the Magic?". I played this song over and over on the piano until my mother thought she would go deaf. The song has a particularly beautiful intro, part of a Bach or Beethoven prelude to something in A minor I think. It would just haunt me, and to this day one of the few songs I can still play completely by memory. Of course, my Melissa hates Barry Manilow and thinks Melissa Manchester is entirely "too theatrical" for her tastes.
So bizarre for me too since I would now rather listen to Depeche Mode or anything techno, but I will always love that song.

We kind of played it by ear for each of our children LOL

Marshall Wayne = DUH + John Wayne
Hillary Mariah = Love the name Hillary + Song -They Call the Wind Maria (movie Paint Your Wagon)
Nicole Christine = (God only knows LOL )
Caitlin Ashley = Don Johnson's wife in Miami Vice ( Sheena Easton )

Coppertop, aka "Kevin Ryon", was named for his uncle (I call my son "the improved model") and Debi's surname. "Kevin", in Gaelic, means "wise old man"...and he's getting there. The red hair, fair skin and blue eyes are an Irish "bonus".

If he'd been a girl, the name would have been "Michelle Elaine", a combination of our middle names (William Michael, Deborah Elaine). Both were compromises, but he is distinctive in that he's the only one of our kids (stepkids included) whose name has no Biblical reference.

When I read a certain book at the age of 12, I picked out 2 names then for a son and a daughter. When my oldest son was born we named him Rhett Todd. He is known as Todd to the entire neighborhood and beyond. His sister came along 16 months later and her first name was picked out but we had to search for a middle name that went with it. She was named Tara Leilani. We pronounce her name the way an Irish person would, Tarr-rah.
Their younger brother came along almost 3 years after his sister. He was given the name Jared which I found in a book I had read and he was given the name of a person my hubby knew in high school as a middle name. So his name was Jared Beau. His middle name really fits him as he likes to dress with high priced brandnames. Right now he is on board the USS Theodore Roosevelt in service to our country.
My grandson was given the name Kaleb Michael, my daughter choose to spell it with a K instead of a C.
