SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- A ruling by a U.S. appeals court could force millions of students to stop reciting the Pledge of Allegiance within days if the controversial decision is not overturned by a higher court, legal experts said Saturday.

Public schools with some 9.6 million students in nine states have until March 10 to stop reciting the pledge after the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals backed its prior ruling that the words "under God" in the pledge are a government endorsement of religion.

The nine states included in 9th Circuit are California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Alaska and Hawaii.

I think this is such a very sad thing to hear, I am sure it is only time before more states join in and then it will be just a memory for some. Really it is such a shame.

If they are going to throw a fit, at least just make it voluntary. It is a sad day in America when you can't even say the Pledge.

Yes... it makes me very mad how the USA is going downhill now. Just why does it have to be like this?

I'm surprised Wisconsin isn't in that. The Madison School Board wanted to ban the pledge in schools, but the public had such an outrage, that the pledge is still in the schools. It was huge! I'll see if I can find a few articles about the whole fiasco.

Absolutely ridiculous! I'm sorry but telling children and adults alike that they can't mention God in schools is horrifying! The pledge of allegiance has stated those words since the day it was created, and if you mess with that, you mess with history! Get a grip, people!!!

Actually, the phrase "Under God" was enacted in 1954. However, the oath of office for the President, ending with "so help me, God", was not originally written in; but George Washington intoned it, and all future Presidents have folowed suit without exception since then...well, maybe not if Hillary by some fluke (!) gets the nod. I can see it now...

"So help me 'Sophia', Goddess of Wisdom", or some similar feminazi New Age BS. (Just possibly, "So help me ME?" LOL)

Either way, I see NO reason to exclude the Almighty from public acknowledgement; those who disagree can ignore it, as we have to ignore all the counterculture crap now thrust in our faces daily. "But as for me and my house, I will serve the Lord." Unapologetically.

If I'm to believe the radio talk shows, this will be appealed to the supreme court where the bets are, that it will be overturned, and the pledge reinstated in those states. That 9th circuit court seems to be a real piece of work! Where is it in San Francisco, or Sacremento?

This country was founded on a belief in god. Here we are facing the biggest threat in our history. As a country we better not turn our back now! God save the USA!

I don't understand these people. How in the heck can they arbitrarily make up rules for everyone in the USA. What good do they think they are doing by constantly sturring crap up ?

If I had children in those schools i would have them politely disobey. If I had to go to jail then so be it! Sometimes you have to take a stand in what you believe! That would be a great lesson in a good cause for peaceful civil disobedience.

I'm sure that the American Center for Law and Justice, or ACLJ (the Christian Coalition's answer to the ACLU) is preparing their briefs as I write; they have a staggering success ratio in lawsuits in such matters, and this is just another fight for them to win.

actually franklin pierce did not use the words i solemnly swear and "so help me G-d" in his inauguration. it is reasoned that he did this because his wife and son died 2 months before he took office and was grief stricken.


and as for the pledge, i have no problem with someone including the term "under G-d". in fact i include it. but if someone chooses not to say it, or even recite the pledge that is their right. as long as they stand respectfully that is all is needed in my mind.
but as you said before 1954, the term "under G-d" was not in the pledge. my parents who grew up in the period of time before then did not use it in school. the term in G-d we trust was not always on our money. so i say what is the big deal whether or not these terms are used?
