THIBODAUX, La. — Darla Gray was allegedly clever enough to con six men out of their money. She did not think, however, to use a fake name and address during the scams.
Gray, 27, was arrested last week and charged with six counts of theft by fraud, according to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office. Her Internet scam reportedly netted her about $3,000 between December and August, police said.
She is accused of posing as an "Attractive Black Female" on the Internet and wooing six men from Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, Mississippi and Georgia.
Gray, who is not African-American, would allegedly arrange a meeting with her man and get him to wire her money for her airfare. Once Gray picked up the cash at a Western Union, the men would never hear from her again, according to police.
Police became aware of the alleged reneging romantic when one of the men called to report what happened. Authorities had little trouble finding Gray because she used her real name and address when dealing with the cyber suitors.
Gray is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 10 in Lafourche Parish court.
