MODESTO, Calif. -- A detective has testified at Scott Peterson's preliminary hearing that Peterson bought a boat the same day he told his mistress that his wife had died and he was facing his first Christmas alone.
That was about two weeks before she disappeared.
The fishing boat became part of Peterson's alibi when his pregnant wife, Laci, disappeared two weeks later, on Christmas Eve. Peterson said he was fishing that day.
Detective Allen Brocchini's testimony at Peterson's preliminary hearing in Modesto, Calif., is designed to show how the defendant was allegedly plotting his wife's murder before he returned from a Christmas Eve fishing trip and reported her missing.
Brocchini said during the first hours of his investigation at the Peterson home, he took a loaded .22-caliber pistol from Peterson's pickup truck, providing the first hint that Peterson owned a weapon. He also had investigators take freshly laundered towels and a mop and bucket from the house.
It's not yet clear whether Peterson's mistress, Amber Frey, will testify when the hearing resumes Wednesday.
Peterson was arrested after the bodies of his wife and unborn son surfaced months later in San Francisco Bay, about 3 miles from where he said he was fishing on the day before Christmas.
