The boxcutter incident

#1 Postby sunnyday » Tue Oct 21, 2003 4:21 pm

This young man notified the authorities weeks ago that he had put those boxcutters on the plane. They didn't even check it out for a while--supposedly thought it was a joke. I have to say that he showed how safe we are in planes, huh?

I wonder how he was able to get through the security checks? I don't think the kid should be punished and I'm glad the gaps have been exposed in aviation security.

From what I hear, the boxcutters were those with plastic handles, which would have been easier to slip through the screening. The handles could have been placed in one part of the luggage and the blades, if positioned correctly, could have been angled so that the screeners would only see them as they were laying flat and straight on. So instead of looking like this ////////////////// or this _____________ , they looked like this ___ , which might not have looked like much to most screeners.

According to the USA Today, he sent a letter,
months prior to the incident, to the FTC notifying
them that "items" would be left on several planes
to test security measures. The FBI had reportedly
been watching him, since then.

Good question Johnathan - were they watching the right person? Why didn't they jump all over his stuff when he got onto the first plane? How many people/terrorists are being "watched"??? :o
