This is the link to the announcement of an open house at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Peachtree City, Georgia (south metro Atlanta) this coming Saturday October 25th from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
I'm planning to attend, and will likely be there from around 10:30 a.m. until noon....and the weather this weekend looks fantastic. I hope to see you there
Here's the announcement:

It'll be an honor RP! I'm planning on arriving around 10:20-10:30 a.m., and staying at least until noon.
My dad works security at a large lighting distribution center only about a mile away from the NWS office; if he's working Saturday (as he has the past couple), I'm planning on meeting him for lunch. If he doesn't work, I may stay at the Open House a little longer, and just drop by his home near Newnan before heading home.

Yep RP...I'll definitely have Larry Munson tuned in on my radio...listening as my Dawgs tune up for the Gators by stomping a mudhole in UAB

From 1965 through 1980 or so, I used to be a regular fixture at the National Weather Service office in Rockford, Illinois. Back then, security was virtually non-existent...I could walk in the place at midnight, sit down and chat with a meteorologist, and then take an ob or two for them. I remember those guys and still stay in touch with some.
I still drop a note to NWS Chicago at times...in Romeoville, IL. They have some new faces, but are still a great operation.
So...Perry, hope you enjoy your visit. I can talk weather with the best of them...sure you can too.
And, by the way, if anyone ever wants to visit NWS Phoenix, let me know. I might be able to help you get past that security guard through an arranged visit. Don't know the folks too well there, but they have invited me on occasion.
Enjoy.

I visited the local NWS office twice in one year -- once at an open house and another time as a job shadower. It was great fun!
On a related note, our local NWS is having its Open House Saturday. I wonder if all offices are having them on the same date.

I'm surprised they have security guards at the NWS in Phoenix....I've never seen any at Peachtree City....or at the WSFO in Jackson, Mississippi.
When I lived in Mississippi, I'd drive down to the WSFO every couple weeks just to chat with the meteorologists and browse through their severe storm archives/ records. Of course, I always called ahead, and made sure to go when the weather was boring (no threat of bad weather or storms).
Of course, that was all before 9/11/01....and everything has changed since then. This will be the first time I've been to any National Weather Service facility since 9/11.

Perry, I also hope you have fun at the National Weather Service Open House.
I went to the Open House at the National Weather Service in Taunton, Massachusetts, five or six years ago with one of my brother's. It was a great take and I would like to do it again. Perhaps I will get to the National Weather Service in Melbourne at some point; my brother (same one) lives minutes away from their office. He is planning on moving out of Melbourne, but not too far away, [of course.]
Garrett, I checked the Taunton, MA offices website and they are not having an open house this Saturday, (October 25th). With at least one of many [I checked a few others] not having one, I can see that it isn't a nationwide event.
There is information about the open houses on your local National Weather Service office's website, as well as Perry's.

Must just be a coincidence then.

Tom, the NWS in Taunton holds an open house every two years. I went there 3 years ago, I believe, when I was living on the Cape, so this year would be an off year (Unless my memory is off, which it very well can be

)

Anthony, I heard that the NWS in Taunton, MA holds an open house every two years. If this year is indeed an off year, then I attended the 1998 or 1996 event.
