I was getting sick of WIN98 so I upgraded to WINxpHomeEdition.

First off it won't let me register, well obviously because its my friends CD, but it will expire in a month.
At first I really liked it and considered purchasing a registerable copy but I've been getting freezing and random shut downs for no reason.
Plus some of the controls are diff, plus there are other little errors I keep noticing popping up.
Yeah it doesn't freeze but sometimes it just doesn't do anything for a minute. I'm on 128mb RAM, but It's fine half of the time so its not the memory.
I'm going to have to reinstall WIN98, but as long as it doesnt freeze up all of the time and crash like the old install did I'll be happy.

I was under the impression that even though you have the CD it will not let you register. It is a security feature with XP. They want to make sure you buy your own version of the program.

I have win98 at home and WINXP at work. And I tell you that the XP stands for "Xtra Problems". Seriously though, I prefer WIN98.

I have Win98 as well. I have heard that WinXP does have problems. At some point when I get a new computer, hopefully there will be no problems.

Actually XP is MUCH more stable then 98.. No doubt there.. I do not recomend the home version though.. Go with the xp PRO.. Cant go wrong

I agree Chad. XP is their best product so far.

I also have a Win2000 machine. Very Stable as well. I turn it off maybe once a month for the heck of it.

Woodstock, Does your computer meet the min. requirements for XP? If it does, I would go with the XP Pro. Requirements may be a little less for windows 2000, so you might consider it.

With either one, you should do a clean install. And make sure you have the correct drivers.

I have to agree with Chad. WindowsXP Pro is a very solid product. As the IT manager for my company and a network technician for almost 20 years you can take that to the bank!

I agree XP Pro is the way to go..however there are hardware and software driver and compatibility concerns for older machines..no doubt.

Win98 does most everything thing a person needs however it will not be supported in the not to distant future.. Microsoft will be making some big time ching when they stop making patches/updates for Win98.

Before you spend $100+ on any upgrade to a PC older than 2 years..consider buying a new Machine with new everything. mho

We have XP pro at work and its flawless. Of course we're not allowed to install our own software on the machines, which is probably the biggest source of problems.

I'm using ME at home, and true to it's reputation, it is somewhat quirky. But then, this machine gets a lot of use and abuse from everyone in the family. There's always junk getting put on it. It will lock up a few times a week and I have to be vigilant about keeping it cleaned up. It's working a lot better since I upgraded the Ram to 256. Something about the ME memory manager, I think.

I just found about 500 megs of images in one of the caches that were put there when I was looking at animations of hurricane Isabell. These were from the S2K links and they were just sitting there taking up space.

Our DELL 4400 Dimension came with Windows XP Home, and we have had NO problems with it at all.

I upgraded to ME a few weeks ago, and haven't had any major problems, at least non I think due to the ME! lol

Good to know. Thank you for the information, Marshall, Chad, Ed and Bill. I heard issues that weren't awful about Windows XP, (not sure if there were any with 'XP Pro') and ME.

With the current system I have Windows 98 isn't too bad, it crashes more than it probably should, but for the most part I have had no problems. On December 30th, I will have my computer for 3 1/2 years.

we had ME and just upgraded to XP pro. it seems to be doing ok. my husband has a few problems with some of his stuff. we had alot of problems with ME. but then again i think its this computer. we have had nothing but problems with it. XP seems to be ok, but dont get me started on gateway.

I have a Gateway, too. From the time I got it (nearly 3 1/2 years ago), back to the 1990's they were the #1 computers out there.

When we get a new one, (my mother) and I are planning on getting a Dell.

XP rarely gives me problems. It is doing that because you don't have a registered copy so a lot of the security packs etc can't be put on your comp so you get basically the beta version of xp.

XP home is like the ME of WIN 98 IMHO. Now WIN 2000 Pro is a great program but not as solid as XP Pro. I have XP pro but I am scared to use it since I purchased it in Russia :o

As for your problem that is correct unless you register the program on Microsofts DB within 30 days it will cease to work.

I have Windows XP Home. It came loaded on my comp when I bought it. I haven't had any trouble with mine.

YEP! I have xp pro and have no complaints!!!
