PASADENA, Texas (Court TV) — A suspected bank robber left cops a key piece of evidence — his driver's license.
Rene Castillo, 34, was arrested last week and charged with robbery after police tracked him to a Houston apartment complex.
Castillo is accused of entering a Southwest Bank of Texas and demanding cash while keeping one hand in his coveralls as if he had a gun, police said. Castillo allegedly grabbed an undetermined amount of cash and fled in a 1999 Ford Contour, according to police.
Witnesses were able to give investigators a description and license plate number for the car, which had been reported stolen a day earlier from Advantage Auto Sales in Houston. According to the dealership, a man test drove the car and never returned it.
But while the driver kept the car, the dealership kept his license. Bank employees were able to identify Castillo in a photo lineup using the picture from his license, police said.
Castillo remained at large until he reportedly called a car towing service to pick up and return the stolen car. Police staked out his apartment complex and arrested him when he tried to leave in a different car, one he allegedly purchased after the bank robbery.
Castillo is being held in Harris County jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
