The French do not lack for military prowess at all; the WW I "poilus" held the Kaiser's forces at bay for 3 years, the "Free French" and Resistance made up for its 1940 rollover in WW II, and the Metro "Paras" (also called "Lizard Caps") are among the toughest troops ever sent into battle anywhere...and let's not forget the brutally trained "Legion Etrangere", or Foreign Legion, which still exists.
What France lacks is effective leadership; she hasn't had a true military genius since Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte left Napoleon's army to accept the Swedish Crown...
Yet (and try to remember this), whenever France DOES want "in on the action", as in Afghanistan, they always place their offer under the ridiculous provision that a French General is given overall comand of all forces (?); and THAT is a truly French joke! LOLOLOL
