IRVING, Texas -- After an overnight shooting outside a north Texas apartment, one man is dead, and three Irving police officers are on administrative leave.

Police were at the scene of the shooting Sunday morning, collecting evidence and talking to witnesses.

Police received several calls Saturday night from people who said a man was threatening people at the Silverado apartment complex with a gun. Witnesses gave police a detailed description of the man and officers spotted that suspect at around 11 p.m. Saturday. When the officers attempted to detain the man, he turned toward three uniformed police officers and pointed a pistol at them, police said. The officers fired, striking the man multiple times.

None of the officers involved were injured, but the suspect, whose identity was being withheld until his next of kin could be notified, died at the scene.

It is standard procedure that the three officers be put on paid administrative leave until the completion of the investigation.

A word from someone who's "been there"; the moment a suspect points a weapon (knife, gun, etc.) at a sworn officer, all bets are "off". The officer can NOT take any chances with his, or the public's safety.
