Arrest Made After Tennis Stars' Sister Killed
Slain Sister Described As Confidant, Adviser To Sisters

COMPTON, Calif. -- A 24-year-old man is in custody and two other suspects are being sought in the shooting death of the older sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams.

Yetunde Price was shot in the chest early Sunday in a crime-infested Los Angeles suburb about a mile from the tennis courts where her sisters first rose to prominence.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says Aaron Michael Hammer has been booked for investigation of murder. He's being held without bail. Sheriff's deputies say they are still searching for two other possible suspects.

Price served as her famous sisters' personal assistant and was often seen at tennis events.

Deputies say Price and a man she was talking to got into some sort of confrontation with local residents. Authorities say they don't know if Price and Hammer knew each other.

Deputies on patrol heard gunshots and found Price, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. An assault rifle was found at the scene and neighbors reported hearing six to 20 gunshots.

The man with Price was not hurt and drove her to a relative's house where 911 was called. He's since been jailed for a parole violation.

Venus and Serena Williams have returned to Los Angeles. The family said in a statement that Price was their "nucleus" and their "rock."

In a statement, the Williams family said Price provided stability to the family. The statement goes on to say that Price was a confidant and adviser to her sisters and that her death "leaves a void that can never be filled."

Venus and Serena were close to Price as well as their two other sisters, who could often be seen in press boxes and hotels with them.

All five girls are the daughters of Oracene Williams, who was previously married before she wed Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena.

The sisters spent their early years in Compton, a crime- and poverty-ridden community where gang fighting has claimed many lives.
