TROUBLE AT NATO

#1 Postby bfez1 » Mon Feb 10, 2003 8:33 am

NATO was holding an emergency meeting today in the wake of the decision by France, Germany and Belgium to block military planning to protect Turkey in the event of war against Iraq. The three nations fear sending hardware to Iraq's northern neighbor and NATO's only Muslim member will hurt efforts to resolve the crisis with diplomacy

I saw that this morning on the news. That is a big development to say the least. Hopefully, something can be worked out.

This is the first time in the 53 years of NATO that a member state has been refused military assistance; what's with France, Germany and Belgium (which should be better described as "not a state, but a chocolate drop", courtesy a guest on FoxNews)?

And does the NATO vote have to be unanimous before it can act? Three countries out of....17?
