Heavy structural damage on Columbia

An Air Force tracking camera in New Mexico that photographed the final minute of flight by the space shuttle Columbia showed "heavy structural damage on the left wing near the fuselage," a source familiar with the investigation of the disaster told NBC News on Friday.

Thanks for the info Bonnie... it will be interesting to see if they can determine what caused the damage. Theories run the gamut from the foam to space junk to a small meteorite to metal fatigue. What ever caused it, we lost 7 great people on that Saturday.

I hope they do find the cause so this terrible tragedy never occurs again. Like you said, 7 brilliant, vibrant people were lost on Feb.1, 2003.

I think they may never find out. I just hope they do and prevent this terrible tragedy from happening again. God bless the astronauts famalies
