A new car!

#1 Postby DaylilyDawn » Thu Jun 21, 2012 2:24 pm

Last year our old car died on us in the middle of the intersection while trying to turn into the VA clinic parking lot in Tampa. We managed to get it started again and pulled into the parking lot and found a spot. As we were turning into the space it died again and we couldn't get it restarted. So after we were finished with the appointment one of us had, we called AAA and had it towed home to a repair place in Lakeland. The repair guy said that if it was his car, he would start looking for a newer vehicle, not necessarily a brand new car. So we started looking at new cars. Our car was 19 years old. We decided on getting a Honda. So we test drove a CR-V at the Lakeland Honda dealership and after seeing an add for Brandon Honda, hubby wanted to go over there and check out the CR-Vs they had on their lot. We found one that had everything on it that we wanted on one. The color was not the first choice but it is one I can live with. Hubby likes the color more than I do so we are happy. We picked out a CR-V in the Twilight Blue Metallic color. One of the features on it is that you can plug a thumb drive into it and play any music on it through the radio. Just imagine listening to music with no commercials. We had to get a new car since we will be leaving to drive up to VA. to help our daughter-in-law with our grandson due to his daycare being closed for vacation and she is working and her hubby is in Chicago for school for the Navy so she needs us. It gives us a chance to see the youngest grandson ( we see him once a year or so versus seeing oldest grandson every day) it gives us a break from the stress from oldest grandson's behaviour.

I have an '06 honda crv and (knock on wood) it's been great. I only have about 45k miles on it and i'm hoping it's going to last me for many more years.

Have a safe trip and have fun with your grandbaby! Don't spoil him TOO much!

I have a 2008 Honda CR-V and LOVE IT! She has over 95,000 miles on her but that's because for the first 2 1/2 years, I was driving 500 miles a week to work. Now it's only 200 miles a week. I've paid her off and I think I'm going to let her age gracefully for a little while as I save up for a new one that I don't have to finance. I think it's the perfect size ( I have the baby-blue color which I love!). I DO NOT like the 2012 model shape this year and I hope that they get rid of that "pregnant" rear-view window look in the next model change. It really does nothing for it and I do not understand what the benefit of that was.

Best of luck with your new baby! :)

Too light duty for me. I need something that would stand up to real SUV elements. Hail, storm surge, debris, off-road, bob's roads, deep snow, etc. Honda and the thin sheet metal just won't stand up. Kinda always thought of them as Civics with a lift. You have baby them for them to last a long time. I went with the Jeep Cherokee. Gotta love the old AMC engineering. Refined...hell now...but you can't argue with the longevity of the 4.0L AND it's ease of modifications and capabilities. MPGs aren't bad if your lift and tire upgrade isn't crazy.

We don't live where there is snow, we don't do off road things since my hubby has bad knees and as far as debris on the road, you find that on all interstates in the US. We are in our 50's and 60's so we just needed something that gets good gas mileage. I drive to Tampa or St. Petersburg once a month from Sept through June for my daylily club meetings. I needed something that would allow me to carry flower holders with out messing up the flowers prior to entering them into our flower show. And we needed a new car since our other one is on its last legs.

That sounds fair. I just am not a fan of Honda's newer products. The quality hasn't kept up in recent years. Still miles better than Toyota (god those things are getting bad).

What other models did you shop for. Why did you pick Honda over the other offerings?

We looked at Dodge(we had a Dodge Intrepid, bought in 1993, new) looked at Kia. but didn't like what they offered for the price they wanted on it. Then we stopped by the Honda dealer here in Lakeland, took a test drive in a CR-V. We knew that we couldn't afford the prices that Ford, Chevy wanted for a small SUV. So after the test drive, we talked it over between my hubby and myself. He wanted to check out the Brandon Honda since Lakeland only had 3 CR-Vs on it lot. Got to the Brandon dealership and looked at several and Hubby decided to go ahead and buy the one that had everything on it that we had talked about . The only thing we didn't get on it was the navigation package because it would have added 5,000 to the price. We just bought a GPS unit to take on our trip to VA on the 12th of July. It has a moon roof and bluetooth capability which is good since our phones have bluetooth. As far as having people ride in it. we just have our oldest son sometimes riding in our car to go to his job. He doesn't have a car or license back yet. He had them suspend for a while due to points acquired in a short time. He is a very slender guy that weighs only about 98 lbs and always been under 100 lbs due to kidney disease he was born with. He had to have a kidney transplant in Sept. 2000. Sometimes we have to take our grandson to school or his dad's place if his mom is working. But other times the grandkid rides in his mother's car.

It sounds like you bought the SUV you needed. It does make a difference as to what you are going to use them for.

Just light hauling of sacks of dirt (like topsoil) and potted plants like I buy at daylily meetings. Just what we wanted .

I can usually fit 7 - 8 bags of mulch (2 sq ft.) in it without putting down the back seat. That's what I was looking for in an SUV because I like to garden too and the CR-V is just right for it. It also helps when moving. Small furniture like nightstands, small tables, lamps, boxes, etc. fit in my CR-V when I was moving in the fall.
