Hey everyone!

Yesterday, I shot my first weathercasting tape at 4FSU at Florida State, and my first ever weathercasting tape altogether. This is the link to the video, and its also on my facebook:

Please let me know what you all think. I have my own opinions, but i'll let you all comment without tainted thoughts. There will be many more to come, but I will not post all of them.

Congrats! The only suggestion I have is be add more energy! Don't be like Stephanie Abrams at 6am, but you know, give it your own flare and pizazz! Good job overall though!

I'm no metero, but I'd say become one with the green screen. Make those features extensions of your arms. Show passion.

I think we all take for granted how difficult that green screen can be to work with. Even worse than not knowing where your hands are is when the slideshow won't co-operate with you. Looking at the TV monitor to determine your own position must be more distracting than trying to have a phone conversation with your own voice echoing back at you from the other end...which can really throw me off and make me forget what I was about to say...

Last week my government professor (who used to be a mateorologist before going back for a Ph.D in polisci) pulled up a 6 hour satellite loop and asked me to explain the impending snow/ice storm to the class. I thought it would be easy...but I forgot to mntion a whole bunch of things, felt like I didn't explain things properly, and had some other regrets...but I think the harshest critic is usually yourself, because everybody was impressed and supportive of me. The worst part was when I told everybody we'd have 2 snow days in a row, and we ended up having 1....after making such a bold prediction with little more than hunch to back me up, I was panicking watching the roads dry out so quickly.......but when I came back everyone was impressed that I had called the one snow day correctly, to which I quipped, "that's why I want to be a meteorologist...can you pass any other class with a 50%?" I guess you can't worry too much about being wrong in this field.

With more practice, the green screen and the public speaking become easier. Great job Jonathan!!!! Keep it up!!!

OK Here is my tip.....Put the mic box in the back of you.....which is out of site.
This tip came from doing a TV Production class.

A big update for today. I JUST got off the airways for a the first time. Unfortunately, I was unable to get on here before it was live a little bit ago. BUT, it will be rebroadcast at 11pm ET tonight at http://www.livestream.com/fsuweather or Comcast Cable channel 4 if you are in the Tallahassee area.

I also made a tape (#15!) after the broadcast, but it probably will not be uploaded for a while. I'm having a very busy week.

Jonathan, I saw the live broadcast. You obviously had the "first live broadcast" jitters tonight. Honestly I thought your earlier tape was better. It appeared to me the jitters got the best of you as you seemed to click through the slides(whatever you call it)too quickly which made you nervous as you tried to get the whole forecast in. It almost seemed that you weren't ready with your forecast. I don't know if you guys work off of a teleprompter or what so I can't say much. As to how to get rid of those jitters, I think that comes with time and practice. I don't know as I have never done forecasts in front of a camera. I have spoken in front of crowds before and was definitely quite nervous, but I wasn't using technology like you do so it wasn't that much multitasking. Overall I give you a C+ or B-. You looked good on camera, just too nervous.

It wasn't so much first time jitters as much as it was nervousness on waiting for results on a NWS Mentorship opportunity (which I did not get). We do not work off a teleprompter per say, but we do have screens around the room to look at. Thanks for the comments, they are truly helpful!

That sucks about the mentorship!!! I just knew you were going to get that. There is something else waiting for you that will be even better. Just be watching for it.

Hang in there Jonathan, remember - you are the subject matter expert. Rely on your knowledge of weather as your sixth sense, and just focus on the presentation. Your request for constructive criticism tells me your gonna be all right kid!
