NORFOLK - Frank Batten Sr., the media magnate and philanthropist who founded The Weather Channel as chairman of Landmark Communications, died this morning in Norfolk at age 82.

The Virginian-Pilot, the flagship newspaper of the Landmark chain, announced Batten's death on its Web site this morning.

I just read this as well, and it is sad...the ending of an era indeed.

Yes, TWC did a nice piece on him last evening during the 10-11 segment - may he rest in God's peace...

I first heard of Frank Batten 30 years ago, during a "MET 1010" class at the local community college...
