Woman 'torched Briton's genitals'

A Greek woman accused of setting fire to the genitals of a British tourist in Crete is due to appear in court.

The woman admitted assault after dousing the man's private parts in alcohol and igniting them, but says she did so after being sexually harassed.

Police on the Greek island say the tourist was drunk and had waved his genitals at several girls before allegedly groping the suspect.

The man suffered second degree burns and is recovering in a private clinic.

The 26-year-old suspect handed herself over to police, claiming she had acted in self defence.

She has won praise on Crete for what has been seen as defending her honour, the BBC's Malcolm Brabant said.

Little sympathy

According to police the 23-year-old tourist was drunk when he dropped his trousers in a nightclub in the resort of Malia.

The suspect, who has not been named, said she doused the man in Sambuca and torched him after she asked him to stop harassing her and he failed to stop.

She will be questioned by an investigating magistrate in the city of Iraklion.

The case has been widely discussed on Greek television, and there has been precious little sympathy for the young Briton, said our correspondent.

He added that many Greeks are sickened by British bad behaviour in Malia and other resorts.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that in the early hours of Tuesday a 23-year-old British male national was assaulted in Crete.

"We understand he suffered burns on his chest and abdomen.

"He has been receiving consular assistance."

You get what you deserve...don't play with fire, you'll get burned.

If he did indeed sexually harass, and then started feeling up on her, then he got what he deserved.

I can not imagine anyone being so drunk that they would do anything so totally stupid and vulgar, especially to someone they don't even know. I guess it takes a certain demeanor along with being drunker than 10 skunks to do something like that.
Not sure he got what he deserved(pretty freakin' harsh). But jail time does seem in order(long jail time). But, too late for him now . Bet he never does it again.

Jail time for both of them, yes. No way should she get away with that.

I'll bet HE CAN'T!!

If he was drinking Sambuca too, he had know idea what the heck he was doing. He was probably pretty messed up - I'm surprised he was still able to stand.

good luck finding a jury to convict her. I know I would never convict if I were on that jury (except the guy for stupidity, the worst crime of them all)

The guy had exposed his junk and was practically trying to rape this women. When you're in a situation like that, you have every right to do whatever means to protect yourself. I know he was drunk, and he may be a good guy when not, but that was his choice to get totally smashed out of his mind. That's why I want nothing to do with alcohol in my life, nothing NOTHING good ever comes from it.

Where does it say he exposed himself or attempted to rape her?

A Greek woman has appeared in court accused of setting fire to a British tourist in Crete after he allegedly groped her in a bar.

Stuart Feltham, 23, from Swindon, is recovering from second-degree chest and stomach burns in a private clinic.

Maria Fanoudaki, a 26-year-old student, said she poured a drink over Mr Feltham after he made inappropriate advances, but denied setting fire to him.

She faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison if she is convicted.

The trial in the town of Iraklion in northern Crete was adjourned until Monday.

'Absolute nonsense'

Ms Fanoudaki's lawyer Nikos Maniadakis said: "He fondled my client's breasts and buttocks and she poured her drink over him and left.

"Shortly afterward she heard cries and saw her friends trying to extinguish him."

The woman was charged with assault on Thursday after she turned herself in to police.

The story has made national headlines in Greece, where some have hailed the woman as a heroine.

Mr Feltham's parents have insisted reports their son sexually harassed the woman were "absolute nonsense".

Ian Feltham, 48, said his son was approached out of the blue by a complete stranger who threw accelerant over him.

Stuart Feltham was at a bar in the town of Malia at the end of a two-week holiday with five friends.

I'd ask BBC about that. When I originally looked at Hurakan's link above the BBC article said exactly what Hurakan quoted (I looked at it moments after he posted it). Also a quick search on the internet will show a number of countries are now carrying news releases with similar titles.

I must admit I grinned re: what the fellows here would have to say about that  piece of news.
