Further reminding me why I didn't go to a religious school.

Cat, not all religious schools are like that. My kids went to catholic schools their entire life and were never forbidden to do anything like that. There were certain things things they couldn't do...cellphones on campus, calculators in some of the math finals. They had to wear their complete uniforms or get sent home. And because they represented their school even not during school hours if they did something wrong they were brought into the office about it. You can't base all religious schools on this one school.

This school is a fundamental baptist school where they don't believe in dancing the young man signed an agreement at the beginning of the school year. I would think he and his parents read the schools policies before they signed the contract with the school. No one forced him to sign it or even go to that school. What is the purpose of having guidelines if someone isn't going to adhere to them especially when it is a religion based school.

Would i have sent my child to a school like that? Maybe if i were a devout funalment baptist. But my husband and i are catholic and wanted our children educated in a catholic environment.

Yeah. I missed the part about the contract.

I don't understand why the principal of the baptist school signed off.

I am also wondering why the committee had to meet to determine the punishment. Maybe the handbook didn't cover this scenario.

Yeah, the baptist school is a private institution with an agreement. They are within their rights to have whatever code of conduct they want, as long as the school acts within the bounds of the agreement.

The handbook for the 84-student Christian school says rock music "is part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people's hearts and minds."


If that were true, I'd think this world would be a lot different than it is now.

Such paranoia is one of the reasons I ran away from religion.

And no CM, I dont think of all religious people that way. They do alot of good things for people, but there are those certain groups who in my mind are completely off their rocker. This particular school being one of them.

there are simply more important things for high-schoolers than girls... such as getting accepted into college, etc. That is more important than 5 minutes of pleasure

for the record, I did not go to my prom either. Instead, I had more fun practicing hitting power draws in the rain on the practice tee for an upcoming competetion (though I should have practiced the driver in the rain as I made 2 8s due to the driver slipping in my hand on the downswing)

Some people go a little over board with there interpretation of what their religion stands for. I wouldn't worry all that much about it if I were that kid and I would still go. God put us on this planet to live our lives, I don't think he's sending anybody to hell for going to a prom.

To judge religion by the strictest interpretation of Southern Baptists (most aren't as strict), or the actions of al Qaeda, is to paint with a very broad brush.


My all male Catholic high school hosted monthly dances and girls from nearby all girl Catholic schools were invited to attend.


I don't agree with the Baptist's strict interpretations on music and dance, as they are found in the Old Testament, and the description of the Wedding Feast at Cana, where normally the best "oinos" or "woinos" (root of our word wine) being served first is not referring to grape juice as some claim, but like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, whose theology to me is removed enough from the Gospels as to not qualify as Christianity, judging the tree by the fruit, to some degree, most Baptists and most Mormons are good citizens and nice folks.

that's what I view the act that many engage in after prom... as a mere 5 minutes of pleasure. Loving the girl is far more important

When I want pleasure... I spend 25-50 dollars and enter a poker tournament. Can give 5+ hours of pleasure AND a little extra $$ on the side

While I think that the rule is silly, I must agree that if it is a rule to be followed while attending that school then he needs to abide by it.

I didn't go to my prom mainly due to lack of a date and being pretty unpopular.

I went to my prom and it was okay at the very best. After prom was much better.

If i were a fundamentalist baptist and wanted my child in a private school i would send him/her there but those aren't my beliefs so they wouldn't go there. I'm just confuzzled that they signed the contract and should know what they signed and should know the beliefs of fundamentalist baptists and they're making a stink out of it. If you don't want to abide by the rules of that particular school there are plenty of other schools out there.
