You've brought some very happy childhood memories! My paternal heritage is Czech and maternal heritage is Polish/Russian. I can remember attending ethnic extended-family weddings as a little girl back in the mid-to late-50s, enthralled by the polka bands -- rollicking accordion, wailing clarinet, and all -- at the VFW or Elks' Club Halls that wedding receptions were so commonly held. [I also remember being offered tiny sips of beer from my daddy and grandpa during those pre-air-conditioned late nights, but that's another story....

] It was fun to watch the many styles of polka dancing, from the sedate smoothness of the grandparents and older aunts/uncles to the frisky hopping and wild twirling of the younger adults and teens. We little kids [I had dozens of cousins] would skip around madly, crashing into each other on purpose, of course.
Have you ever watched the "Big Joe Polka Show" on RFD-TV? It's on Wednesday evenings, I believe. We have access through satellite, but I haven't caught it in quite a while. I'm glad this thread reminded me to tune into some of this "happy music" again.
