You've brought some very happy childhood memories! My paternal heritage is Czech and maternal heritage is Polish/Russian. I can remember attending ethnic extended-family weddings as a little girl back in the mid-to late-50s, enthralled by the polka bands -- rollicking accordion, wailing clarinet, and all -- at the VFW or Elks' Club Halls that wedding receptions were so commonly held. [I also remember being offered tiny sips of beer from my daddy and grandpa during those pre-air-conditioned late nights, but that's another story.... :P ] It was fun to watch the many styles of polka dancing, from the sedate smoothness of the grandparents and older aunts/uncles to the frisky hopping and wild twirling of the younger adults and teens. We little kids [I had dozens of cousins] would skip around madly, crashing into each other on purpose, of course.

Have you ever watched the "Big Joe Polka Show" on RFD-TV? It's on Wednesday evenings, I believe. We have access through satellite, but I haven't caught it in quite a while. I'm glad this thread reminded me to tune into some of this "happy music" again.

Thank you so much for the memories!!! 100% Polish descent here, married a man who father was in the Polish-American String Band for over 50 years and played polkas on his organ & accordian all the time! I can't remember the name of the show now, but there used to be a Polka show on every Saturday on the AM dial and it was bad reception but we would try to get it in the best we could...not to mention all the albums we had and singles too!!!

The weddings I went to, the dances my parents would drag me to, the parties when I was little, the polka club, sigh...those were great days!

Love the accordians! They look really hard to play.
