New 'Rockit' high-tech roller coaster coming to Universal St

Universal Studios is about to build a new signature ride: a high-tech roller coaster full of lights, music, loops, twists and turns -- and a quick trip over the heads of people walking through the nearby CityWalk entertainment district.

The Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit is planned to be big, bright and brash enough to become the new visual symbol for the theme park when the coaster opens in about a year. Universal Orlando officials said Tuesday that it also will feature enough digital technology to appeal directly to what they refer to as the "YouTube culture."

Universal Orlando officials said the coaster will rise 167 feet into the air and feature numerous loops and corkscrew turns. Rockit -- the first big, outdoor thrill ride for Universal Studios -- is set to open in spring 2009.

It will provide another link in Universal Orlando's recent chain of big new attractions. An overhauled version of an old ride, renamed Disaster!, opened in January. The Simpsons Ride, a 3-D fantasy-simulation ride replacing the old Back to the Future, is set to open in a few weeks. And several still-undisclosed attractions are to open together in late 2009 as the "Wizarding World of Harry Potter" in Universal Studios' sister park, Islands of Adventure.

The flurry of activity follows a dormant period of nearly three years during which Universal offered no big new rides.

Although it will be the tallest coaster in Central Florida and one of the fastest in the state, the Rockit will be nowhere near the tallest or fastest in the amusement-park business. But like the Incredible Hulk in Islands of Adventure and several other Florida coasters, it aims to use innovation and novelty to make up for any lack of record-setting height or speed.

"We like to go for the best," said Mark Woodbury, president of Universal Parks & Resorts' creative division -- though Universal would not comment on the project's cost.

Rockit will offer high-energy video displays in the waiting line; high-intensity, color-changing LED lighting and digital audio and video effects during the ride; and various engineering innovations.

'A whole new level'

And unlike any of the other big roller coasters in Central Florida, Rockit will loom over its park's entrance and beyond. Universal plans to squeeze its track between the Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast ride and the Sharp Aquos Theatre, which houses the Blue Man Group show. From there the track would run along the boundary between Universal Studios and Universal's sound stages, then rise over the fence to twist over the sidewalks of CityWalk, outside the theme park -- a brightly lit, scream-filled advertisement for the park.

"We like to look at this as taking the thrill ride to a whole new level, both physically and figuratively," Woodbury said. "It's iconographic in its position. It's going to do some things no ride has done before. And it combines entry into the digital age with the ability to customize and personalize the ride for each rider."

That particular digital-age feature will allow riders to select their own music and create a music video of the ride. Afterward, a rider could download the video and use it on personal Web pages or video-sharing sites.

But the ride -- which Universal officials had referred to for months by the code name "Project Rumble" -- still draws principally on the basic thrills of a roller coaster: speed, height, loops, corkscrews, twists, turns and drops. Universal officials said Rockit would have several signature moves and a record-breaking loop, though they would not elaborate. The artist's rendering that they released shows the track climbing a 167-foot-tall peak, then corkscrewing downward, twisting eight times.

'It's a natural for us'

The ride's Internet-based theme digresses a bit from Universal Studios' original theme, which was all about "riding" the movies. But Universal officials insisted that the coaster will justify the inclusion of the word "Hollywood" in its name -- a term also adopted earlier this year by Walt Disney World when it renamed its rival movie-studio theme park.

"We've always fancied ourselves as embedded into the Hollywood culture with Universal. It's part of our essence. It's a natural for us," Woodbury said. "The name is very specific to the attributes of the ride. It combines creating your own movie, to customize it; that's the 'rip' part. You can download it to your personal site. And you ride it, of course. You have the 'Rockit' part, which combines the thrill and the music."

This is a very major development. Just a reminder Universal just revamped Earthquake into Disaster, will be opening The Simpsons Ride within the next month, and will be opening Harry Potter Island with 2-6 attractions in Late 2009!!!! This new ride is high-tech, and will be a first of its kind. I'm very excited about the announcement.

What happens if people start to throw things at the riders while they are passing from above?

I don't know how that would work, there would be like a roof of nets all over the place and it would look ugly.

They do it for all roller coasters that travel over walkways. It's very common.

little tidbit from Screamscape.

2009 - Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit (Project Rumble) - Confirmed - (3/20/08) Today I can add the official artwork and logo for Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit.

Image

Thanks to having access to the high-rez artwork, I can zoom in on that giant loop and as you can see, this is exactly the non-inverting loop that I mentioned yesterday.

Image

I’ve also included a photo I took at IAPPA 2003 which is a close up of the unique lap-bar only restraint system they use on the X-Cars as well as a new aerial image of the site.

Image

Please note that the red area does not indicate the exact area where the coaster will go, only the general open areas where we think it could go. So far the description only says it will go between Jimmy Neutron and the Blue Man Group theater, and nothing at all has been said about the old empty Boneyard site.

Image

I’ve also posted the official descriptions of the ride from Universal Orlando below:
Adrenaline pumping and music thumping, you find yourself heading straight toward the sky. Suddenly, you are doing 65 mph, 17 stories over Universal Studios. Gasping with excitement, you rock out to a song you picked before strapping in. And, it’s all on video. Once the adventure is over, you edit the video to send to your friends.
This is true high-tech, customizable, multi-sensory entertainment. Scheduled to open in spring 2009, Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit will stake its claim as the most technologically advanced roller coaster in the world. The Universal Creative team is combining audio and special effects engineering, sophisticated on- and off-board video and one-of-a-kind guest personalization to create a roller coaster experience unlike any other.
“This is the perfect intersection of the digital age and theme park entertainment,” said Mark Woodbury, President of Creative for Universal Parks & Resorts. “Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit blends roller coaster intensity and guest interaction in a way where no two experiences will be the same.”
Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit touts six near-miss moments and first-ever thrills including a record-breaking loop. Ride vehicles feature the brightest and most innovative color changing LEDs in the world. High-energy visual displays fill the queue line. With up to four ride vehicles on the tracks at any given time, and with concert lighting and special effects mixed in, Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit will be a true high-intensity, multi-sensory experience that is unmatched.
Guests can customize their ride experience by choosing what song will play while they’re on the roller coaster. LED boards in the queue lines will display song options from five genres (classic rock, rap, country, pop and disco). Once on-board, guests can choose their song or let the coaster’s digital sound system choose for them. When the ride is over, guests will be able to customize footage from their experience and compile it into a take-home music video.
Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit will be located near the Jimmy Neutron attraction traveling the southern perimeter of the Universal Studios theme park, over to the CityWalk lagoon and back.

I've done a little research on the X-car. First of all, Chest restraints are no more. The x-car has lapbars that along no movement of the waist. However, they they do allow full movement elsewhere. This is supposed to simulate flying or racing. With the x-car there are no vibrations. Another thing with the x-car, there is a VERY fast acceleration mechanism. Instead of an incline and fall for accelerate, there is no incline, and the acceleration is on flat ground. the flat ground is very short, and you get taken off the ground and likely into a loop before you can figure out your going 45-75mph. And another thing with x-cars, they are silent and manipulatable. They produce almost no sound. And the standard X-car is 2/row and 3 rows, but that can become 2 by 2 and cars be linked together. The cars speed people through the lines. And because of the area of the coaster coming to Universal, there will be more than one, and likely up to 4 cars, going around the coaster at any one time.

Here is some video from Maurer Sohne, the creator of the X-car. Select X-car or X-car Launch.

Hey everyone,

I have quite a few pictures from the web. To bring everyone up to date, the new concert stage is 100% done, and has been used the last few weekends for Mardi Gras. The coaster tracks are 80% laid, and the worlds first non inverting loop was finished today! All that is left trackwise is the 170 foot drop.

HRRR is now in testing. Numerous test runs have been done in the last few days in and around the rain.

Many of the technical details have been released here , Some of the more interesting details include:

--Thanks to six on-board cameras, eight high speed special effects (Matrix-style) cameras, and 54 special fx shots you will be able to produce your own unique ride video. The ride itself is enhanced with LED lights on the cars and an illuminated track that will create a different experience for day and night rides.

--While on-board, two 55-watt Marine Polk Audio speakers will pump out one of 30 songs from 5 genres that guests will be able to select via a touch panel on the ride’s restraints. Each genre will include three songs from legacy artists and three songs from contemporary artists.

Also another quick and amazing fact is that a train will leave the station every 23 seconds, and that each train will only take 16 seconds to climb that straight up lift!!

I'm a rollercoaster fanatic! I would love to ride that!

The nets aren't that noticable. The Hulk had them years ago and you really didn't notice them.

I actually dont know if the nets are there yet, but I am sure they will be because of the crowd surfer part where they will only be a few feet from the public and the ride queue/line.

Here is a pretty good summary of the ride in words that I found on screamscape.com:

In case you were wondering the coaster itself is the new X-CAR style coaster design from Maurer-Sohne. Looking at one of the trains, you’ll notice that the X-Car features a pair of small six-passenger cars linked together into a train. The X-Cars themselves have been designed to be the most maneuverable coaster cars created, which plays a big part in allowing for the variety of new track elements you will experience. Even better… (or worse depending on how scared you are) the trains will feature a lap-bar restraint system, allowing your upper body feeling free.
Once your on board, the first thing you’re going to notice is that 17 story tall vertical lift hill sitting right outside the station. Well, you may notice the audio system first, but that’s a story for another time. If you’ve watching any of the test run videos caught so far, you’ve noticed how slow the lift hill is, but this is only a test mode. When the ride opens the lift will quickly pull you to the top at 11-feet per second, topping off in just 16.5 seconds. Peaking out at 167 feet in the air, you are now on the tallest coaster in Orlando… higher up than when you peer out of the top of the Tower of Terror. You’ll have a brief moment of peace at the top to take in the view of the 3,800 foot long monster ahead of you before you take the plunge.
The first element you’ll zoom into after the drop is what Universal is calling the Double Take, otherwise known at the world’s largest non-inverting loop. At each of the vertical ends, your X-Car train will twist completely around to the opposite side of the track, keeping your train upright at all times.
After a brief pass through a trim-brake, you’ll enter the Treble Clef, another first ever maneuver, named so because the way the track twists around here looks similar to that of the Treble Clef music symbol. If that wasn’t enough for you, part of the track will blast through a hole in one of the building facades just outside the queue for Twister at this point. Fun Fact – According to Universal, the idea for the Treble Clef was first sketched out on a paper napkin.
Next up on the list of unique elements is a little something called the Jump Cut. The idea here was to create a negative-G airtime maneuver like a camelback, but to do it all while spiraling. The end result is supposed to be an element that gives you the sensation as if you are flipping upside-down through a corkscrew, but without ever going upside down.
While the unique elements are over, your ride certainly is not as you’ve still yet to experience the Crowd Surfer (95º angle fly-over the crowd), Drop Tuning (a drop underground as you pass the Blue Man Group theater) and Plot Twist (an incline loop, banking you up to 150º while performing a 360 helix turn.
If that wasn’t enough, they’re going to pack an intense audio system, a complicated camera system to capture your experience on the ride, plus lots of cool lighting to the coaster to really make it a wild new experience.

The ride opened for the first time to the public today. Soft Openings today. So far reviews are two thumbs up. Minor complaints, music not loud enough, a little rough, line a little long (most likely due to the technical problems that come with 1st day openings), a height maximum. Found out today, you cannot be over 6'6", for if you are, you will have your head or hands chopped off. lol Nobody in the public has been allowed to ride at night yet, and since that is when the ride will be at its best, the best reviews will be coming in the future.
