Cajungal,
You might want to check out myspace.com. The radio was saying that students are posting on myspace to try and let parents and family that they are ok. Sorry I don't know how to check or how to find anything on myspace but the radio was announcing this info.

MySpacers register with an email address. So, if you know someone's email addy, sometimes you can find their MySpace page that way. Then again, sometimes people have numerous email address -- one at work or school, one for home, one for registering on sites where you might get spammed, etc.

IMO, don't let this stop you from pursuing your dreams.

I agree. VaTech is an excellent school. I wouldn't allow an aberrant event like this to influence a decision to go there.

Well, this was one of several concerns I had. I haven't been hearing good things about its biological sciences program compared to other schools.

Well that's another matter. Obviously if you can get into a better program elsewhere, you should. I just wouldn't let this tragedy be a big factor in the decision.

The death toll shot up :( When I left earlier, the death toll was officially 1 and I read a few sources saying 7-8 dead and I put that down to the usual rumourmongerintg and misidentifying wounded as dead. To put it in perspective, 32 victims is well over half the number of the people shot in England and Wales during the entirity of last year (57 gun murders). It's the one statistic that scares me the most about going to America. I'm starting to think I should pack a bulletproof vest in my lugagge when I come storm chasing in 2 weeks time. I know I'm still statistically more likely to die in a car accident over there, but it's one extra thing to worry about.

We have CNN on the television down in the cafeteria at work. AT that time the count was 22 dead and about 29 injured. How horrible and my prayers go out to their families!

cajungal - I hope your co-worker gets in touch with his cousin soon!

You almost have to go to a school like West Point (the school not the town) if you value security I guess. They might filter out some of the dark siders. Then again Edgar Allen Poe attended West Point.

The unfortunate fact of the matter is that this massacre could have happened on almost any college campus in the U.S. Here at my uni you could literally walk right into a building and do whatever you wanted. All of the laws in the world will not stop a determined killer. There is no rhyme or reason for things like this. There are a lot of missing pieces right now, but something tells me the gunman was either a disgruntled student or a mentally deranged male with nothing to lose.

I wonder how Larry Hincker feel now??????(Sorry but this has to be told)

Exactly. Instead of 33 killed in just one day, there would be more spread out over the course of the year. I could easily imagine situations where disputes over all sorts of things would likely be settled (by some) with gunshots.

IMO, allowing students to bring guns to school is little more than a bandaid to the problem.

Charles Whitman (a lone gunman) killed more people than Klebold and Harris.

Ducky which incident was Charles Whitman involved in?

I know Klebold and Harris was the Columbine one.

I know Klebold and Harris was the Columbine one.

Previously, the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history was a rampage that took place in 1966 at the University of Texas at Austin, where Charles Whitman climbed the clock tower and opened fire with a rifle from the 28th-floor observation deck. He killed 16 people before he was shot to death by police.

Ironically, my parents and I just watched a show yesterday on serial killers (which included Charles Whitman). The reason why Charles did so "well" though, is he was a former Marine, so he had the training already. Sad day indeed in the U.S., hopefully nothing even remotely close happens for a LONG time...but I have a feeling that people may copy cat :(

Charles Whitman was the UT Clocktower shooter, who claimed 16 lives.

I won't find out anything about my co-workers cousin until Wednesday if he works. Since I am off tomorrow and I don't know his last name or his phone number. He is fairly new at work.

It is. This type of behavior is almost always an American. I can't remember the last time I heard of an east Asian going bonkers and shooting people.

Why does america have so many shootings anyway?

not meaning to sound offensive just everytime I hear of a massacre or a shooting 9 times out of 10 it seems to take place in the USA?
