For those wondering how bad a strike on the tour de france would be and why canceling stage 1 may be prudent, have a look at this clip from the L'Alpe D'Huez stage in 2001 to see how close the fans get to the riders and how many there are. Wont have the same number because it is a flat stage (and in the mountains, especially the Pyrenees the 1 million plus drunk fans on the climbs would take care of any terrorists), but it could still be quite severe

The whole "those who cure you will kill you" thing from Al Qaeda in Iraq is pretty creepy. It isn't possible to protect all the soft targets from car bombs whether they are bike races, shopping centers or night clubs. The airports are much more significant targets because they can cause widespread travel delays that have a ripple effect in other countries.
