I am kinda surprised at how many parents cooked liver and onions for thier whole family. And also surprised at how many parents like it. My mom likes it too but always cooked it for herself as a treat, and same with my mother in law. They never made it for the family because no one but them liked it. I as well don't like it but was never forced to eat it. I can eat a fresh fried gizzard every now and then though. :P I can also make a mean batch of fried okra, learned well from good ol grandma, all of my kids can't get enough of the stuff. 8-)

And a Fried Bologna sandwich isn't too bad, if your hungry!

I'll eat my grits and oatmeal, but you can keep the Cream of Wheat, it's just nasty to look at.

Oh and somebody is cooking their Meatloaf's the wrong way......My husband and son beg me to make Meatloaf cause they can't wait till the next day to eat a Meatloaf sandwich! Use the McCormick meatloaf mix and it's perfect. Or just add an egg, smashed up crackers, salt, pepper, and some Lea & Perrians....its perfect! I do put ketchup in and on it. You gotta take it out of the dish or drain the grease off or it does get nasty.

Mary

Maybe we should write a cook book :)

You are making me SICK Mary :ggreen: MEATLOAF SANDWICHES....OMG, those nasty things brings back memories, BAD memories :ggreen:Sitting in class back in elementary school(1965-66) I would be STARVING waiting for lunch, bell rang, I'd run get my bagged lunch, open it up and there it WAS...the SOGGY, meatloaf sandwich on WHITE bread with MAYONAISE  Uggggggg

mmmmm.. I absolutely LOVE day old meatloaf sandwiches!!! That being said, it has to be our family recipe version. - not just any meatloaf.
Liver and onions are ok - in fact I get occasional cravings for some - but it must be cooked just right and covered in gravy.
Cream of Wheat! My grandma used to make it one day, let it cool and harden. The following morning she'd slice it into sticks, deep fry it in bacon grease and serve it with pancake syrup. ( Hate to admit it, but I loved it).

OMG, that sounds awesome. I used to be just a grits kinda girl but FIL is from Pennsylvania and hubby grew up on it. I finally cooked it and I love it, all my kids do too, gotta make it with milk not water though. And that stuff will turn into concrete if you let it sit. Anything fried up in some bacon grease has to be good. :P

YUM!! That DOES sound good!

My mother always fixed grits and same thing, she'd fix a HUGE batch, put 'em in the frig over night and the next morning she'd cut it up in pieces, fry 'em in bacon grease and serve with syrup....could this be a reason for my high blood pressure and high cholestoral? :cheesy:

Me either, I was always mad cause I had the scrap the dang stuff out of the pot it was cooked in if any was left over and hadn't been put in water to soak first! Besides that, with 2 growing boys and 2 girls at home, there were no left over grits!

Mary

PS can we get spell check back??

The only 2 things that stick out in my head were Lima Beans....still hate them, and peas........I can handle those now. They would make me sit at the table for what seemed like an hour till I ate at least half of them. I remeber almost puking a few times. I do not do that to my kids now. I make them at least try whatever it is, but never force them to eat it

My mama loves Lima beans and I can't stand the smell when they are cooking let alone eat them.

I never liked my Mom's liver and onions. I would actually get almost sick when she made them. I learned how to make them with tomatoes and a great tomato and onion gravy. Make some mashed potatoes and YUMMY. It has to be baby calves liver.

My Mom made mush -- which was a cornmeal blend that she would chill overnight. She'd slice it up and fry it in oil then serve it with butter and maple syrup. OMG it was Yummy.

My southern grandma made the fried cream of wheat - but my northern grandmother ( from the Pittsburg area) made fried Mush with the cornmeal. I liked both ... but then again .. I have the taste buds of a truck driver and will eat just about anything :-)
