It should also be mentioned that this is not the worst school attack is US history, though it is the worst school shooting. In fact, CNN is reporting that it is the worst shooting, period, in US history.

The worst school attack was in 1927 when 39 were killed at a school in Bath, Michigan. However, it was a bomb, not a gun, that was used. Of course, the number today could pass 39.

Thanks btw.. I actually just saw the new #s on Cnn's breaking news teaser when I walked by the Tv.. watching it, and trying to stay online and see if anything new happens.. This is just so surreal.. It seems like the news in this story keeps getting worse.. everytime the death toll goes up, it skyrockets..

Prayers 4 all those in VT..

E-mail from a student to another student posted on another current events site:
email recd. from scene at VT (12+ / 0-)

Names removed..

Apparently 31 are dead NAME last heard ... while the rescue squad
was in Norris looking for survivors someone called in a bomb threat...
the rescue workers were evacuated and couldn't look for more
survivors ... NAME had 2 patients who jumped out of Norris windows to
avoid getting shot. They jumped out of windows that were in classrooms
on the 2nd floor. Broke their legs/foot ... one of NAME's patients was
shot, he said only reason why he survived was because a dead guy fell
on him and covered him from shooter .. who came back and finished
everyone alive off in the room.

Ugh, I still can't find the member with the "VT" avatar. I even looked in the sports threads, but I'm limited on time, so I may have missed it.

The ones I did find who said they are VT students -- Hokie1, adelphi_sky, and dhweather.

I looked a little and couldn't find the avatar either. Brent posted earlier that Fodie77 goes there as well. I hope we hear from these members soon.

Scaryed Dreamz, not sure if the spelling is correct, used to use that as his avatar if I remember correctly. He is now a active member on Eastern and has since graduated I believe.

Thanks, Scott. I just checked SacrydDreamz and he doesn't have that avatar anymore. I'm not sure if he's the one people were thinking of though, since he hasn't posted much here. It could be though.

I just heard where a student survived in a classroom where everyone else was shot and either killed or injured...by laying down and playing dead. I just can't imagine what these kids were going through.

I'm just shocked. I just came from FIU and at 6 PM I have another class. It's unbelievable.

This is so sad, my gosh when I heard about it I immediately thought of my son and daughter, one at the university here in town and the other at a high school here, just terrifies me to know neither one of them is really safe when they are at school. Prayers coming from here to VT staff and students

This is unbelieveably tragic! My thoughts and prayers go out to VT students and staff.

What would make the gunman do such a thing?!?!?!?!?! Whatever particular problem he has, why take it out on a school?

One can't expect to find any sense in something like this.

I've had the Boomtown Rats' "I don't like Mondays" going in my head since I saw this story - that's the level of reason we're dealing with here.

Hi All,
I would like to echo the sentiment that my thoughts and prayers are with all connected with VT.
However, I just heard on WWL radio that a New Orleans native was in one of the classrooms that was attacked. The father or uncle called in and said that the gunman entered, shot the teacher, and then began to spray the students. out of 15 students in the class 12 were wounded one while trying to secure the door after the gunman left the room. I don't know how accurate the report is but that is what the caller said about 30 min ago on WWL Radio.

Our local news counted 27 shots in less than a minute from a student that was video taping the incident outside when it was happening. My prayers are with the family and students who are grieving.

33? Holy crap, it was 22 when I left for class today.

Even though we're on the other side of the state, VCU is on virtual lockdown right now - security is super-tight, and some departments were discussing contingency plans...even though the shooter is dead and there aren't likely to be any copycats here.

But this is pretty much a nail in the coffin of my graduate application to VT - between this and three bomb threats in the last two weeks (including two I just heard about on the news), I can't be assured of my safety...and I currently live in one of the 25 most dangerous cities in the United States. :(

Heard this on the news on my lunch hour. Co-worker said that his cousin goes to that school and he was frantically trying to get in touch with him with his cell phone. But, so far has not got in touch with him.
