It's really just not that big of a deal, despite the way people seem to react. Let's do some math:
Say you drive a car that gets 20 mpg (which is quite low) and you drive 20,000 miles per year (which is quite high). You would use 1,000 gallons of gasoline per year. At $3.00 per gallon, that's still only a $3000 per year expenditure (about $250 per month). While annoying, this is hardly a crippling expense. And remember, this is for a gas guzzler being driven a lot of miles in a year.
Lets do some more math ...You are on a fixed income...Your now paying $75.00 to $100.00 more a month a year ago...Lets see maybe I can tell the kids we only eat every other day...It is a crippling expense and its only going to create all goods and services to raise their prices as well..You did not factor that into your math...$3.00 a gallon would be a disater and if something isn't done soon were heading for it...

Or you could drive less. Or do away with some luxuries (even the poorest in this country have many luxuries).
$3.00 a gallon gas has been needed for a long time to get Americans to think about our extreme wastefulness as a nation.

I rather just pay $1.50 for gas...What are we supposed to walk 30 miles to work...Maybe we should just quit are jobs...I tell you what I'm not a waistfull person and am struggling to make ends meet.....What luxuries are you talking about. I know I don't have any..You actually stating it for our own good we pay $3.00 a gallon...

Sure, who wouldn't. But I'll be shocked if we ever see gasoline below $2 per gallon again in my lifetime. In fact, I'll be surprised if it doesn't hit $3 on average by next year. We've hit peak production, and demand is still growing.

There are three options. You could sell your car and buy a more fuel-efficient one, you could find a job closer to your home, or you could move closer to your work.

I cannot speak for you personally of course, but I have yet to meet a single person who has absolutely nothing in their lives that they spend money on and which they could not live without.
You actually stating it for our own good we pay $3.00 a gallon... I think I will end this before I thorw my monitor though the wall....
It's tough in the short run, unless of course you own stock in an oil company, but it's good for us as a nation and for the world in the long run. The fact of the matter is that we shoul dhave developed real energy alternatives BEFORE it hit this point. Now we just have to work extra hard to get the alternatives online.

PK does make a great point. We have been spoiled for many years. Very few nations pay as little as we do and they go just fine. Matter of fact, there are several countries that pay more than we do (sometimes three times as much) and still have a better economy than the US.
With that said, I personally agree that the instant high in prices are pretty bogus. However, it's not to be unexpected. Obviously gasoline will not drop significantly in the future. I'd be pretty surprised if it does drop below $2 again.
We, as a nation and as a world, need to focus ahead in the future. We've made such great strides forward in technology yet very little advances in automobile fuels. Instead of focusing on alternative fuels and/or better fuel economy, we're trying to get bigger and wasteful. (For example, the explosive rate of SUV sales)
With that in mind... here's a beautiful picture I thought ya'll will enjoy. http://photos.aberration.org/pics/01122 ... rgia_s.jpg

I've heard about how high the gasoline prices are in Europe as compared to the US. We ARE spoiled when it comes to what we pay in fuel costs.
I do agree that we need to take advantage of the technoloy we have now and find alternative fuels. I am rather pleasantly surprised at some of the automobile companies actually going ahead on their own and creating hybrid cars. It only makes sense to me. I do own an SUV - a Honda CRV and I am anxiously awaiting for the time when Honda comes out with a Hybrid CRV.

There is not one poor working person in America. Not a single one.
We are lucky to be buying gasoline. We are lucky to have property deeds or be renting. All of us are fortunate. There are no truly poor people in America. While there are people down on hard times, if you are online chances are you have an automobile, you have hundreds of dollars in fixed assets.
Not to say gasoline prices won't pinch families. But if you have a washing machine, dryer, toaster, microwave, phone, computer, internet connection, cable tv, and a working automobile : life is good.
I am amazed by our prosperity. I have more income than most people do, and I see my peers spending their money with little knowledge of how many work months for what they spend in minutes.

Can't compare Europe to us as far as gas goes...Some areas pay more in tax for a gallon than we pay for a gallon.. Most area are pay more than $3.00 in tax...D.C would be in flames if that happened here...
Also I am a American and proud of it......I feel for these other country's but I'm not giving up what little life style I have because the governments are corrupt...
I Don't see why I would give up anything or just except that it is ok for me to spend $3.00 a gallon. These oil company's are just getting richer and richer to a point where IMO it is a big oil conspiracy...
I was born American and I will keep my toaster....
