Well guys, thanks for all the help. I talked to ticka last night and she told me to defrag my HD. So I ran a thorough scan disk and defrgged overnight...everything is MUCH better tonight. I have Pirch, KazaaLite, AIM, and Media Jukebox all running simultaneously and not ONE problem has occurred. The comp is just as fast as when it first boots up, and it's been running non-stop ever since I did the scan disk at about 6PM last night. Again, thanks for all the help and THANK YOU ticka for (hopefully) solving my problems.

Oh BTW, KmanWX told me via AIM that I needed to press the space bar as the computer shuts down, and the shut down will work. I tried that last night and it shut down, so THANKS kman.

Has anyone ever had the icons in the lower right hand corner of your screen (near the clock) "disappear for no reason"? This happened a few times to me last night. I had to/wanted to reboot my system, after doing so they [obviously] return after the reboot.

Why do you suppose this happens? Thank you in advance.

Tom, that happens to me, but only after I close Yahoo Messenger. I don't know if it happens now, after defragging, but I do know what you're talking about. I don't know how to fix it though. :(

OtherHD, if you do decide to Upgrade to XP, take Stormchazer's advice. You can't get a copy from your dad's work and install, because you have to have your own key to get in and it will shut down after a period of time. Microsoft is getting a bit cranky in their old age.

I am aware that some files are large and it takes time to scan them, but this has been at this point for over 20 minutes.

Should I run AdAware first, right before I run "Spybot Search and Destroy," even though I ran it (AdAware) twice in the last day or two?

Thank you in advance.

Format your drive and repartition and all this crap will be mute. Have you got important files you want to save?

hmmm... that's a problem. what kind of or how big a problem i don't know but yeah, i'm afraid you got issues... that's wierd. if you ran AdAware without problems, then that's half the battle. AdAware does create a safety backup so you may want to go into "Recovery" and purge everything. could be that Spybot is hanging on a backup file in the Adaware recovery (purely speculative). you are the first person i have personally spoke to who has had problems with this program. here's the company site, take a look at the support pages... http://spybot.eon.net.au/index.php?lang=en&page=start good luck; will be watching your progress... p

(ps: bear in mind since we can't be there to truly assess your dilemma, at least for my advice given, if at any time you feel uncomfortable with the programs or are just plain frustrated, don't be afraid to uninstall them. within the original link i submitted a few posts back, you can find a trial version of Norton's Systemworks 2004 which is excellent but unfortunately unless you buy it, will expire.)

(pps: do you perchance have alot of personal files of your pc? lots of pictures, videos, music files, etc. in the "My Documents" parent folder? having lots of "stuff" will believe it or not, bog your machine down. i just did my monthly cleaning and burned an "October" disc with 238 MB's of information (mostly digital snapshots) and upon deleting everything, my performance increased significantly. bear in mind, pics so long as in jpg aren't so bad but MP3's and other types of audio/video files are very large and should be removed to disc promptly. keep her clean and she'll run full steam!)

*sorry if i seem to be going into overkill*

Don't be sorry...read my post...I'm the king of overkill. I tinker a lot too and I happen to believe reformating and reinstalling your OS is good every once and a while so take it as my opinion.

Thank you, Lyle. This happened twice in the last two hours along with the Start button and the entire "bar" on the bottom of the screen. When I Ctrl + Alt + Del-ed the first time the "Smc" program was "(not responding)," then a 'three letter' program starting with a "C" was "(not responding)."

Anyone else?

congratulations! very glad to hear you are back on! this whole thread has been a learning experience for me too; we'll have to hold these improptu tech sessions again... of course in order to do so, someone's pc will have to bite the dust! p ;)
