From Iran's point of view economic sanctions are like a slap on the wrists. As I have said earlier in this thread I can't see Iran backing down on this, at least not while Ahmadiejad is in power. If it comes to military action then so be it. At least it would relieve some of the tension in the world right now =/.

Ahmadiejad has repeatedly stated that Iran wishes to create an autonomous nuclear power program without being dependant on foreign fuel sources such as Russia. It would only be logical that Iran would spend money on their enrichment program rather than pay for the importation of fuel from Russia. At the very least this could cause contract problems with Russia since it goes against the original plan of paying Russia a healthy profit for importing fuel.

Seperating peace time nuclear power generation technology from the proliferation of nuclear weapons technology has been the subject of much study over the last 50 years. There are systems that have been designed that will enrich uranium only to power plant requirements. It would be wise of Iran to embrace such a technology with an open door to inspections.

Ahmadiejad has also made revisionist history style statements about Israel apparantly in an attempt to invalidate the motive for the creation of the Israeli state at the end of WW2. Since Israel did go on to create nuclear weapons with their nuclear program, at least in the mind of the Israeli there is a clear motive for Iran to do likewise.

It will be interesting to hear the evidence provided at the UN meeting. The North Korean nuclear weapons program was watchdogged for years and our media reports had much more detailed evidence than what we are reading about the secluded NATANZ facility in Iran.

Now it's the war of words about if the U.S. gave the visa to Ahmadiejad or not to speak on Saturday in front of the U.N Security Council.

Ahmadiejad cancels his visit to the U.S. and speak at the U.N Security Council because of the Visas fallout.

Later today the U.N. Security Council will vote to impose more economic sanctions against Iran. The question is if the sanctions will work to disuade Iran from making nukes?

Note=To avoid any confusion, this U.N. vote has nothing to do with the U.K./Iran standoff about the capture of 15 sailors.

The vote was unanimous 15-0 in favor of more economic sanctions to Iran. The question now is if the Iranians will stop enriching uranimun or they will continue to defy the international community.

The second option seems the most logical based on past actions.

And if they defy the U.N.,what more sanctions they can get? I think that the military option to bomb the nuke plants increases bigtime.

The main problem here of taking military action against a Muslim country is that you are not fighting against a country but against all the Muslim world. That's what we are seeing in Iraq.

VIOLENCE WILL CERTAINLY LEAD TO MORE VIOLENCE AND A NEVER-ENDING WAR.

What I see is big defiance from that Iranian Minister. He spoke making his case of why Iran will not stop the nuke plants in front of the 15 U .N Security Council Members which voted 15-0 to impose more tougher sanctions.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki rejected the sanctions and said Iran had no intention of suspending its enrichment program.

"The world must know — and it does — that even the harshest political and economic sanctions or other threats are far too weak to coerce the Iranian nation to retreat from their legal and legitimate demands," Mottaki told the Security Council after the vote. "Suspension is neither an option nor a solution."

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,260920,00.html

The above are the words from the Iranian Foreign Minister that are in defiance of the unanimous U.N. Security Council vote.

What you are basically saying is what I would call appeasement, and as was shown with a certian mr. Hitler, appeasement doesn't work*.

*I'm by no means comparing Armadinajad to Hitler, at least not yet.

I hope the UN didn't expect that the new sanctions would suddenly make Ahmadinejad stop his nuclear program.

Anyway, all these sanctions and threatening will just increase the chance that Iran will eventually develop a nuclear bomb.
