Well, hmm, sorta. If, for example, my sister wants a copy of a CD, I'm not adverse to giving her the CD to rip. But it is so much easier to send her the files and vice versa.

Are you a fan of the artist whose CD's you rip and share? Don't you want them to be able to record more? Remember, there are background singers, studio techs, and many others behind the scenes who need to get paid.

Many of those CDs are bought at secondhand CD stores or bought secondhand from other people. The label, the artist and others aren't getting a cut of those sales in the first place. There are very few RIAA-labeled artists I will willingly go to a Walmart and/or Target to buy when their album first comes out. Fortunately (for the label and the artists), my sister doesn't share my taste in indie rock music.
