http://www.snopes.com/critters/lurkers/lovebugs.htm

They are actually native to Central America; the best guess as to how they came to these United States places them as undiscovered stowaways who arrived by ship in Galveston or New Orleans around 1920. They migrated into Florida in 1947 from Louisiana, looked around, liked what they saw, and decided to stay. Their natural capacity for reproduction took care of the rest.

You would think by looking at everyones cars around here that we would of killed them off years ago ..Yet each year seems to be getting worse and worse...

The female usually gets her way and she drags the male around with her.

So they're a lot like people, I see. :D

I hate it when I wear light-colored clothing and they ride me in to work as I walk through the parking lot.

I've seen these creatures a lot. They really favor mating on certain trees or shrubs, including on flowers. Yes, they are VERY profilic!

Not for the squeamish (you have been warned):

Lovebug memory: Did this a few times over the years as a kid. Run up to the house, grab the doorknob and get a slippery, gooey handfull of squished lovebugs that had congregated on lower part of the knob.

Another one: Family was fishing along a canal. Dad picks up his OPEN, unattended can of cheap-o store brand soda and took a few BIG fast slugs. The can was loaded with lovebugs! Dad was okay at first, but within an hour was having a lot of problems in the bushes.

Yep, they are bad this year.

I bought a 2002 Monte Carlo SS that is red. I have a 2002 Mustang GT that is yellow. I commute 22 miles to work. The bugs blast my yellow car and do not even get on the red one.

Yes those nasty lil' critters are back! I've got a brand spanking new Honda CRV but luckily has that black stuff on the front...dealership said the lovebugs come off so easy with that.

I've been to Florida, they are annoying.

I think Yellowflies are worse.

To my understanding not many things will even eat them...

By that line of reasoning, human beings are less useful than love bugs.

I have so many splats on my windshield, these fornicating bugs are the worst.

Down the shore we have a nasty bug called a Black Fly, they're as bad as Yellow Flies. We also have greenheads but you can kill them easily.
