Other A340 incidents -- all non-fatal.

I've heard about the possibility of a lightning strike and about 90° crosswinds (out of NW) along runway 23/24L.

Radar goes 1 1/2 hours back.
I'm praying for more survivors.

Airbus aircraft are designed so that the computer has the ultimate say, not the pilot. The computer will not let the pilots put too much stress on the airplane, so it limits what they can do-the rate of climb, turn, speed, etc.
Boeing aircraft, on the other hand, leave the ultimate say with the pilot and make it very easy to override the computer.
Perhaps they were caught in a downdraft and the computer wouldn't let the pilots put stress on the airframe in order to get out of it? All speculation, we will see in a few years or however long it takes them to investigate this mess.
Anyways, you all can guess why I am more of a Boeing fan...

Just listening to the feed for a minute and they said at this time no known fatalities. I find that hard to believe, but hopeful also. They had talked to one person who had been on the plane and that person did say that there were quite a few who were in bad shape. Prayers going out for many miracles and no fatalities!!

What's even spookier? I was looking at transatlantic flight schedules today...
Wow. Some things are just.....
The last 2 days I've gotten back into aviation... don't ask why, and now this.
Sometimes I wonder.

There's always a chance that the landing was rough (skidded off the runway), but then the plane was evacuated, or in the process of being evacuated, with everyone sliding out the emergency exits. Then, a lightning strike may have caused one of the engines to catch fire (aren't they saying one of the wings and the back third of the plane is what's burning?) I don't know...but it's a chance.
It'd be better for the passengers if the fire didn't start until after the plane was on the ground and at a standstill AND after many, if not all, had a chance to deboard.
Wishful, prayerful thinking on my part.

Weird coincidence -- dude posting about French FAA and A340 incident.

Probably credible. There very well may be no fatalities on this flight, of there may be dozens.
I don't believe that lightning caused this incident. Airplanes are designed with lightning strikes in mind, and planes are routinely struck by lightning with no ill effects.

Just wait. It took several minutes to load here and I'm on cable. Not sure why.

They are probably swamped with everyone typing in "Air Disaster" on Google. It's now got "Cannot Find Server", I got in right after I first heard about it and it loaded fine.
Sounds like the plane landed as normal but couldn't stop... more like a hard landing which bodes well for survivors. I'd be skeptical of the "no fatalities" until the 291 are accounted for.
