I had Italian back in Middle School and part of High School when I lived in NY. When I moved to NJ I took Spanish since they didn't offer Italian. Actually, I had Spanish in college for two semesters as well. I can recognize some words when they are spoken and when I read them. Actually, I had fun last year when I went to Mexico practicing my Spanish1

I somehow got thru HS without taking a foreign language. Don't ask me how I managed to do that. Then I enrolled in full time college classes at age 30. Went for two years and declared an Elementary Education Major for my degree. Again, I managed to do so without taking a foreign language. Don't ask me how that happened either!!! Then I got remarried, had my first baby and decided to 'stay home' for a few semesters. A few semesters turned into years!!! I went back to college again, this time part time. But the first thing my new counselor said was - mmmm, I see you've never had a foreign language? I muttered - well, no I haven't. Do I need one? Of course YES, was the answer I received. Dang it. Grrrrr. So I enrolled in a 3 quarter sequential French I, II and III class. It went all year. Did I do well? Gosh no!!!! This was about 6 years ago. I've forgotten every bit of it!!! I remember choosing French b/c it sounded so pretty......yeah, right. Every word is preceded by a le or la, and there are feminine and masculine forms of words!!! So confusing. Contrast that to my daughter (11th Grade), she's taken Spanish and is doing very well. All A's. Of course she has youth on her side.....LOL
But I swear if you plopped me down in France, could I converse with a native? He** NO!!!!! Anyone want a great CD Rom on French? LOL It didn't do diddly with me either. Must have been my 40+ ole brain getting in the way.

Guess I'm not that rusty......I remember noir is the word black. Probably a few others. Just don't ask me to string this handful of French words into a sentence. It would not make any sense!!!

Duck, I have the same problem with Spanish. Despite taking it for 4 years, I can only read, write and speak it (not fluently, but pretty well). I have a hard time understanding it when someone is speaking it. I can pick out key words, but that's about it. I guess not using it everyday makes it a bit rusty.

Awwwww....Miss Mary! I don't think age has anything to do with it. Maybe you just weren't meant to know French.
I tried off and on for years to learn how to play a musical instrument. I started in second grade with the flute. Later, it was piano, guitar, trumpet (wanted to play the UK fight song), guitar again, and drums. But no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get a grasp of reading music. I don't understand what I'm supposed to be hearing and what sounds I'm supposed to be making. I just don't have the ear for the notes. The only thing I really got a grip on was drums, because I played the beat and rhythm by ear. I don't know how I could do that and not the other, but I'm not that great. I never was able to buy a set so I could really practice. However, I played in my college band and my mom was like, "You're playing what...? Girls don't play drums." So I said, "But, mom...Karen Carpenter played drums." She couldn't really offer an argument after that because she absolutely loved the Carpenters.
Now, I've accepted the fact that I'm simply not meant to understand how to read music.

So true though....comparing music to a foreign language. Some things just come much easier to us and others are well, like Greek!!!
I'm was always much better with Reading/Language/History than Math/Science in school too. I loved essay tests over multiple choice ones. Matching was okay. I would see students literally sweating over essay questions near me while I was breezing thru them.
