What did you want to be when you grew up?

In the end, we had went through 7 or 8 people and they wanted to hire me for the weekend weather job. I was just a junior in high school and would have to have been available for the morning show fill-ins. I politely said no and they cancelled my internship.
That was my only shot at being on tv and I was in no position to take the job. I may someday go to school to be a tv met, but for now I am going to be a teacher.
A high school junior filling in on a major network affiliate??
Always a meteorologist here as well. I feel going to college for anything will be too much for me. I enjoy math, but never took trigonometry and calculus... I can imagine how I will probably do, depsite my high intelligence.

I remember one night on WRAL-TV5 when Chief Met Greg Fishel had a high school student interning and helping him out during a severe wx situation by monitoring the NOAA radio and giving out the reports to Greg to relay to the viewing public.

On one of the local Orlando stations, you can see someone in their weather center in the background and can tell they are never on-air.
Tom, the difference between where you are and where I am is simply market size. We are a small market and most weather people here (especially on weekends) are not mets. I helped out with severe weather coverage as well. We had a tornado on the ground in SE Kansas once and I was in the storm chase vehicle tagging along. I called in and reported the info. live on-air.

My interest in weather was always there...but didn't even know of meteorologists until my last year of high school...so I guess I never dreamed of becoming one as a kid.
In 1979 I had a scheduled job interview as an on-air TV meteorologist in the wonderful little Mississippi River city of Dubuque, Iowa. At that time I decided against it without even going to the interview. Wonder what would have happened if I had followed through with it.
Have some personal acquaintances over the years who did follow that dream...like Tom Skilling and Larry Cosgrove, Dave Marsh, Bob McLain, Roy Leep, and Dick Goddard. Several of them started with nothing more than a passion for weather...so any of you who might be tempted to follow that dream....give it a try! It might just work out for you.

After the initial shock of having to actually leave my mother and go to school wore off about the end of second grade,
I decided I wanted to be a teacher. ( I cried every day from day one in first grade till almost the end of second grade....pooooor teachers!) I never really wanted to do anything else in life other than teach.
It has always been my belief that a teacher is somewhat like a preacher. Both have to be called of God to do their jobs

That's true, Garrett. Boston, Massachusetts' market is ranked 6th and Orlando, Florida's is ranked 20th.
(I posted the latest TV Market Rankings in the off topic [and responding to a post in the Sports forum]) -----> TV Market Area Rankings
{it was back on Page 18 of the off topic forum..... last responded on January 13th}
With that said, the weekend meteorologists in Boston and even here in Orlando have their degrees.

I remember liking the attendence and grade booklets that teachers use. So, in a way I wanted to be a teacher when I was in elementary school.
