10 pounds and 12 3/4 inches since January 4th. My trick? Don't know if I have one other than stopped eating fried foods (boohoo), chips, fastfood and cut way back on my chocolate. Oh yeah, started walking 2 1/2-3 miles EVERY DAY. Just 48 pounds to go (according to me or 38 according to my doc).

Would someone PLEASE PASS THE CHICKEN FRIED STEAK AND GRAVY?

I've been changing my diet as well. Trying to cut out the carbs and fats as much as possible. So far I think I have lost a couple of pounds, but my official weigh-in is tomorrow. :)

I weighed in the other day. Down 2.5 lbs for the week (as of Wednesday). :) :D WooHoo! :) I weigh in again tomorrow, and I'll let you know how I did. I should be down a bit more, even though I was bad today (a small pizza, two cheeseburgers, and french fries) because I took an hourlong bike ride to compensate. :)

Joshua, are your Cheez-It servings you have mentioned in the off topic forum smaller than previous times? :)

I wish you luck with your weight loss. :D

Time for me to jump into this discussion.

For the last two years, I've been working erratic hours at work. Starting Monday (March 1st), I now have a regular schedule at work. It's also the day I'm starting the South Beach Diet.

I'm so glad there are some of you on this diet because I can't afford to buy the book and I'm like 235th on a wait list at my local library for the book.
I did find a couple of websites that posts some of the recipes and tenants of the diet but it will be nice to know that I'm not going to do this diet alone.

The horrid truth? I'm 196 pounds. My goal weight is 150 and I'm not setting a time period for it. In fact, 46 pounds sounds like soooo much to lose that I'm breaking it down into 10 pound increments. It sounds so much better to my ears to tell myself that I have to lose 10 pounds instead of 46.

Are any of you that are on the South Beach Diet willing to share any of the menus or recipes that you are following?

Been on and off the SBD since September. It does work and work well if you follow it. It is very strict the first two weeks, but it is worth it IMO. I lost 13 pounds the first 2 weeks and then a steady 2-4 pounds each week after that if I did stick to the second phase, which I did till Thanksgiving. At that point I had lost 38 pounds in about 2.5 months. I have not been good since then until just recently and even though I did not go back to the 1st phase, which I probably should, I am once again losing weight. Only about 60 more to go to be happy or 80 more to be ecstatic. We have no trouble cooking on this diet. We don't really use recipes, but I have the book and some of those recipes make me drool. There should be plenty of recipes on the site mentioned above. I will try to be a good boy so I can come in here and report more success. Good luck everyone!!

Tomorrow is the day we (my mother and I) start the South Beach diet. I broke down and bought the book this weekend and I'm willing to share the menus and recipes in it for anyone else that is wondering what this diet is all about. Today I have to go grocery shopping. Many of the foods we already buy are included in the diet. One of my big problems with the diet is that there is alot of fish and I don't eat fish. You also have to drink tomato or vegetable juice in the morning and I can't get that past my nose.

Even though I know that breakfast has always been one of the most important meals of the day, I'm not a breakfast person so I could have a hard time with that. And for the most part, lunches and dinners don't look so bad since I can substitute other allowable foods for the fish.

Does anyone mind if I start a journal thread here at the community forum?

I want to join the group too. I want to loose 8 pounds. I've never been on a weight loss program, so I'm going to need support to be able to stay on it. If I could stop drinking Pepsi I'd probably loose 8 pounds, but I'm addicted. I'm not sure if it's the caffeine or sugar but I have to have it. I'm starting this afternoon. Cutting back slowly on the Pepsi and cutting down on the sweets. I'm concerned that if I go cold turkey, like some of my friends suggest, that I will #1 have a heart attack and die for lack of caffeine stimulation #2 be so mean that my friends and family will dessert me and #3 fall off this horse before I get a good ride. Pray for me and those around me.

I WAS THINKING ABOUT ONE OF THOSE "LOW CARB" DIETS, THEN I READ THIS!

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies:

1. Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. Africans drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.

CONCLUSION:

Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you!

In defense of the South Beat diet, I have been on it now since Sunday (today's day 5) and already I have lost 9 pounds. I am not starving myself; I'm eating 3 meals a day and having 2 snacks daily. My meals include chicken, pork, beef, vegetables (lots of them), salads, and eggs/cheeses.

The first two days were awful to get through. My body was craving the Coca-Cola and Pepsi that I used to drink by the gallon. And because there are others who are not on the diet in the house, there were still items like candy, ice cream, and cookies around. But I stuck with it and now I can look the other way without wanting a sugar rush.

One thing I have learned, though. I was supposed to donate blood yesterday at our blood drive. When the folks from the blood bank heard that I hadn't had any sugar in my body for the last 4 days, they wouldn't allow me to give blood. They told me that giving blood brings your sugar levels way down; without any sugar in my system, it would have put my lights out.

I've lost just a smidge over 3 pounds. I've been working out more and have cut my intake of Pepsi way down. Except for today (I've been really awful), I only drink water at night. I'm not stuffing myself with food by trying to think about every bite I take and why I'm taking it. Am I hungry? Does it taste good? Do I really want it? I had gotten to the point where I was just stuffing myself and I would feel terrible after eating so much. I feel better with my stomach not so full, especially at night. I know it's probably some water weight, but I'll take it.

:D Dannon just came out with a low carb yogurt! It's not too bad. I bought the Strawberry and Peach. It is in a 4 ounce serving. Only 3 grams of Carbs. I don't drink milk so I eat alot of yogurt to get calcium, so I'm glad they now have low carb kind! :D

Looks like we're doing ok. The last two days have been bad for me, but I'll get back on track tomorrow. It's so hard for me to stay off the Pepsi, but that's the secret for me.

It was 4 weeks yesterday that I started the South Beach diet. I've lost 17 pounds so far. I hardly ever have cravings for any of the junk food I used to eat - when I feel the need for something sweet, I'll grab a sugar free popsicle or fudgesicle and that fills that need. I'm joining Curves this week - they are offering us a corporate discount and they will waive the registration fee of $156 if we join. To date, I haven't added any exercise into my schedule yet; my knees and ankles are starting to feel 100% percent better now that I've taken off a bit of weight and I'm not walking around like I'm 100 years old. So it's time to introduce exercise. One thing about this diet; you are never hungry. But on my days off, I still make a million trips to the refrigerator - I guess it's just a habit that I'll have to learn to break. Funny thing about that - little elves aren't filling up those shelves between visits. Each time I open the doors, it's still the same stuff in there!

I haven't gone up or down lately. Must be because I just moved. We'll see what happens soon. My bike has a couple of things that need to be fixed though (brakes suck in the back and am missing valve caps on both tires) so I am not using my bike attm.
