$4.80 (price from litres converted to U.S. gallon) is the highest recent price I've seen at many locations here

It seems to me that there isn't as large a difference between what we pay here in Canada vs the States compared to previous hikes.

Given that our food costs are so closely tied to the price of fuel I think I'm going to start grinding my own grain for bread. The price of a loaf of bread is grotesque.

What's been cool to see ever since the "Great Recession" occurred is that more and more people are getting back into vegetable gardening, local produce, biking to work, etc. I noticed a big increase in the number of people I see in Philadelphia on bikes/scooters going to work. Fortunately I'm only going 20 miles in each direction, not 50 now otherwise I'd be in trouble.

:D I love seeing home veggie gardens and nothing beats the taste! My Great Grandmother had her whole backyard in veggies and oh what a treat it was to pick fresh peas and asparagus there. My husband's mother had about a city block on her farm devoted to raspberry bushes and fruit trees (and another one that size devoted to veggies). What a feast was to be had there in the growing season.

These hard days may be the healthiest for those who can go back to the old ways.

A contact from a gardening site has a very informative blog on self suffiency (along with other ideas and recipes): http://www.2footalligator.blogspot.ca/ She's had some major life changes but has learned to live with a lot less and still eat very well. Her blog has a Canadian address but she is an American living in the United States.

re the price of fuel this is one of the reasons I'm grateful I live in a small city where my house is within 6 blocks of my workplace. I rarely drive and if my husband isn't around (he drives by my workplace often) walking isn't a problem....except when it is -35 or colder (I have walked in that often enough but have broken down a couple of times, in the past two years, and taken a taxi). My son is a geologist who sniffs out oil and gas and now that it is spring breakup and he is back in his hometown he plans on parking his gas guzzler and riding his bike (so much healthier too).

Sometimes we may need a good kick in the pants to get us to become healthier and realize bigger, more, faster, etc. isn't always better. ;)

I hate to sound contrarian because I KNOW how much the added expenses are hurting people on limited budgets and fixed income/expense sheets, but I'm hoping to take a road trip to California in May. We almost decided not to do it because gas is like $4.50/gallon there.... but you know, it's $3.75/gallon here so filling up my Civic will go from $50 here to $60 there. I'll only fill up maybe 4 times on the trip... it sucks, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. 8-)

Well the cheapest stationg went from $3.77 yesterday to $3.83 today by me, sigh. Got lucky on Saturday though, had to use my incentive from my grocery store by the end of the month, so had to go to the $3.92 Exxon, but with the discount I got from the store(1.38), I only paid $2.54/gallon...filled the van up for $40.00 :ggreen: so got a break for at least one fill up

Down to 3.24 here in Gulfport MS. Was talking with my brother-in-law, who is a process engineer at Shell Oil refinery in Norco La, he says demand for gasoline is dropping fast and the refinery is running at 75% capacity.....MGC

The lowest I've seen is $3.53 around my way. Dropped a good 20 cents over the last several weeks. Thank goodness!
