BEWARE - New "Spy Phones"

#1 Postby alicia-w » Wed Aug 03, 2005 1:47 pm

We just got this from our security people today. I would think the warning might apply to just about anyone who wants their privacy protected. We already have a policy that no cell phones are allowed anywhere in our building (all 6 floors), except for those issued by the govt to commanders and folks like that.

Nokia has created and is marketing a "Spy Phone". It can be utilized as an ordinary cell phone, but when properly programmed it can be remotely activated and utilized as a listening device. The phone appears to be off to those in the room when activated remotely. Personnel should be aware of the presence of these phones and the potential dangers posed to situations such as controlled deliveries.

It's spelled "espionage."

What would it be useful for? A very discreet way to overhear anything being said by people in classified/top secret briefings (if in fact any cellphones were allowed in the room--unlikely), people who plan the schedules for heads of state in any country...there's all kinds of national security issues that some not-so-savory people would like to hear about. Troop movements; local security plans for say, a Presidential visit; meeting agendas where there might be a high concentration of high-ranking military or civilians present; you name it, people want to know it. And an innocent-looking phone that transmits while it appears to be "off" is a fabulous way to do it. Won't raise suspicion, can be activated remotely...yep. Not good.

Weird. But, hey, if someone wants to hear me talk to my grandparents, hear my best friend call and say, "Where are ya?" or hear any number of very smart, but somewhat intoxicated buddies call and slur, "Heeeey, gimme ride hoooome!" more power to 'em. They need a life.

It's a pretty neat gadget. I wonder if they make one that transmits video via the camera component, or maybe a pinhole on the side of it (while it's laying flat).

That said... beware of free phones!
