Congratulations on 5 years George! It takes a strong person to acknowledge there's a problem and an even stronger person to stick with the program. I'm proud of you.

I can't say enough about what an accomplishment you have made. A true judge of one's character is how they handle and overcome obstacles in their lives. You are doing a jam up job :D

Congratulations. You have accomplished what most people (exluding the other here) wont, because they choose not to. I am glad that you made the choice to be here with us. You should be extremely proud of yourself, because we are.

And to the rest of y'all, I am glad y'all made the choice to be here with us as well.

congrats to George and all of you in recovery. I was a psych nurse for a number of years and worked with many patients that were struggling with chemical dependency an had family members with this illness also. I do know it is a very difficult road to remain on but very rewarding. Keep up the hard work. Remember to ask for support if you feel you need it from your family and friends.

((Hugs)) all around. I give you guys so much credit. George, how wonderful that you have such a supportive family and have had the courage to take charge of your life again. Bravo

That's one of the special qualities about the family here. This is a loving and supportive place.

Streetsoldier-I did THAT too. My last cigarette was in March 1985 so I'm 20 years free of smoking as well. I took my last puff two weeks before my Mother (a heavy smoker for 46 years) called to tell us that she had the Lung Cancer that took her life a year later. My wife and the weather was the motivating facter. We were in UT and she waited until it was -10F outside before telling me I had to smoke outside or quit. The main thing now is that I need to lose weight.

I have found that I have PAD and an enlarged "ticker", which necessitates quitting...if I want to live. The problem is that I can't afford the usual aids (patch, pills, gum, support groups), and my basic Blue Cross doesn't cover these things.

What makes it even more difficult is that I've been smoking an average of a pack a day since 1968...37 years. :larrow:

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. :larrow:

I did use gum for a while but it was mostly cold turkey. I was helped by the fact that I was becoming increasing allergic to tobacco smoke (my son has been told that smoking a single cigarette could kill him since he's that allergic to tobacco.

I'm trying a timed approach...starting at one every three hours for a couple of weeks, then down from there. Going "cold" has always been problematic for me, but at least this will give me a cessation table to work from.
